Is it just me or are the M series basses the sleepers of the Sire line? It seems that the V7 is more talked about, but the Ms are amazing. I was skeptical at fist as the M7 was not like my usual basses that I've ever liked. I have only had it a week, but it is fast becoming my favorite, and I also own a V7 5 and VV7 5.

M series are just great, but I think people went for the hype of the V7... I have an M3 and it's my go to bass now. Love the tones I'm able to get from it, it's lightness , and it has matched almost perfectly with my Markbass rig. To be honest I play it on passive mode 70% of the time, and the tone still amazes me every time I play. Switching on the preamp wakes up a totally different monster...

I'm planning to buy a M7 next year, as soon as I move a couple of basses that now have become closet queens...

I would love to get my hands on an M7 5 with the ash body in black! That said it will have to wait. On another note, my volume pot is giving me fits again with it being really scratchy. For those interested, about 3-4 months ago Mickey sent me a replacement pre as the original was doing the same thing. It's manageable on the gig but when I play at my church it really stands out. We broadcast live on the web and and have the whole production thing going on so a scratchy volume pot is not high on the needed list! I've done the Deoxit and all that a few times with not much luck. Anyone else seeing this type of issue?? I've been playing this thing week in and week out for a year and a half now and love it but this volume thing is driving me nuts!!

I know,.. they don't match. I plan on changing the pickguard to match up. The stacked knobs are from AllParts, the other 3 from Best Bass Gear

Hey guys, didn't wanna start a new thread... so here goes.

Literally just discovered these beasts this morning, and color me intrigued! I am lefty, so most of the stuff I want... isn't available, or is insanely expensive. These, however, seem like a fantastic deal for an incredibly versatile instrument. That said... I have some questions if anyone can help.

First, what is the difference between the V7 and the Vintage version? I saw a FAQ on the Sire site, but it didn't really tell me anything that I could understand (pickup spacing, different material bridge, etc). How does that effect the sound/playbility? What would either one be geared towards?

Second, I read in this thread that the body wood is likely not going to have an impact on tone at all, so it is more of a preference/look choice, but how does it come across on the white blonde color? The Sire site says the plain white in opaque, but the blonde version may show a little wood through the finish. If that is the case, I would probably go ash for look, but I haven't seen any photos that show any grain through the blonde.

Third, what about the neck? Is there any difference in feel or sound between the two, or is most of it covered up by the pickup (the sound, at least)?

Last, this would be my first active. Since it has active and passive modes, if the battery went out, could the bass still be played in passive till I had a chance to replace?

Thanks guys, appreciate any feedback and help!

I can't answer all of your questions, but if the battery dies, passive mode continues to work just fine with main volume, pickup balance, and main tone. The pickup positioning does apparently affect the sound of the VV7 vs. the V7 - I don't have both, myself, so can't compare.

Sorry you're having trouble with yours, I think you should contact Sire warranty service and see what they have to say.

Yeah, I may have to do that. The bass is something around a year and a half old though. And to add to the now increasing list of issues, moving the mid stacked knob seems to cut the active tone from the bass. I may have to get a luthier to fix this mess.

Here's a quick video that gives you a comparison between the sound of the two (vintage vs standard V7)

Here's a pic of my Ash V7 in white blonde where you can see the body grain:

I have both a VV7 and V7 but the VV7 is a five string so I can't really compare the neck profiles. But I really like both necks as they're both very comfortable to me!

And Bholder answered the battery question, I hope that helps and I hope you enjoy one when you order it! :)

Thanks a ton for that video! Of course, still hard to tell, because they both sound fantastic. It may literally come down to the regular one costing less...

Has anyone thrown on a set of flats? I love the sound Fender flats put out on my current J bass, curious if anyone has used those specifically, or any others.

Speaking of pickguards, I ordered one from WD and it doesn't fit exactly as it should near the control plate. Rookie question, but are pickguards sandable?

Looks like we both got our B/W/B pickguards made about the same time. I just received mine on Saturday. I ended up sending them my pickguard to avoid any such discrepancy, but I still had to drill out all the screw holes slightly larger in order for it to fit properly. Yeah...a file should do the trick. Just do it carefully as I know these pickguards weren't exactly cheap to get made.

Now, the decision of whether I should put back on the pickup cover...

You've got that right, definitely not the cheapest haha! I do like the bwb on white, and I bet a pickup cover would look great on it. I've been debating putting one on my V7 as well.

Yeah, the covers definitely has the "cool" factor, but they tend to get in my way. Decisions, decisions...

Got the notification! Tracking says it will arrive on the 16th and I'm ready. I've already got a spot designated on the guitar wall haha! I'll post some pics when it arrives.

Congratulations! I got notification last Monday that mine would be delivered today. Then I got an update Tuesday stating my delivery was rescheduled for tomorrow. Then I got another update last night saying it would be delivered today. I think they're trying to drive me crazy! Anyhow, I'm having the bass delivered to my work address, so here I sit by the front window! Today will be completely unproductive. But, I'm the boss, so not a big deal.

I just got it!!! It's still in the box. I'm taking it home and will give it a couple of hours to warm up, then I will spend the rest of the afternoon and night with her, keeping my fingers crossed that there are no issue with it. I'll post my impressions soon!

Hey guys, VERY close to pulling the trigger on one of these (in lefty), and am trying to decide on a color... I am looking at purchasing thru Thomann, as the price on the ones I am looking at (V7, Alder) is currently $373 + shipping to the US, WAY cheaper than Sire direct. I am looking at the 3, all with the reddish pickguard, white, black, and burst. I am going alder because from what I have read either a) the wood doesn't matter, or b) if it does, the alder is a little mellower, which I think would suit me better, same with the rosewood fretboard v maple on the ash ones. I typically don't like plain black with white pickguards, but man that looks good with the red. However the guard van also be removed from what I have seen, which makes me like the idea of white, for a couple of looks without buying a new guard. The burst... isn;t really my style normally, but every time I see one the look grows on me.

What do y'all who own these think?
