Not a problem at all. There are certainly cheaper options, but I wanted to stick with something that had some reviews and from a reputable source.

This is what I used:

Thanks! I agree, I find the V7 to be a bit more pigeonholed in the "Marcus" kind of thing where the V5 can wear multiple hats. I feel more connected to the V5 as well, the neck feel is buttah.

Me too! XD Honestly, I wasn't going to keep it initially. I bought it for $450 shipped used on Reverb to review, it was a Gen 2 lightly used V7 Vintage Ash. I played it, had my opinions about the hardware and preamp but I thought the build was excellent.... well you see where that bass is at now and it's not going anywhere.

I am starting to think that a sweet setup would be to have a switch or selector to switch the tone caps. Like something to choose between 0.022 uf, 0.047 uf, and 0.1 uf, to give you the full range. Not sure if there is the space in there to do the wiring, or what would be involved, but the more I read people doing this tone cap switch and the more I want to do it to my 5 string P7... the more I think having a selector would be amazing.

That's a great idea! It's definitely doable, but probably more so in something like the P7 where you have a bit more cavity room than the J basses. Essentially you would pair the switch with the tone pot and wire it accordingly (toggle switches are pretty simple once you get the hang of em).

Indeed! As I gushed about in the vid, I appreciate how the sadowsky pre looks at the standard J bass tone and thoughtfully applies the necessary controls. Not hating on more complicated preamps, as I rather enjoy them in other applications. However when you're throwing a preamp at a bass with a very established tone and style like a Fender J or P, a preamp loaded with bells and whistles is a bit overkill IMO where the Sadowsky gets it just right. That being said, I'm going to be doing a video featuring a V3 where we look at the stock Sire preamp and other drop in options including the Sadowsky (getting a second one, the V7 one is staying put!), Audere, John East, might build an EMG plate for fun, and even some lesser known brands!

Funny you mention Audere. I put them into both my Bacchus basses. Easy and well worth upgrade. My Bacchus five string sound almost as good as my Fodera Emperor Five......almost!

Thanks bholder and papuzzo - went to local store to get DR nickels but they didn't have so the bass guy there recommended some rotosound pressurewounds that he used himself a lot - so went with those and got the action lowered...so am starting to be able to move around the fretboard more smoothly and confidently.
Cheers to all who contributed - I will try those DR nickels next time for experience, I think too... :)

You got my vote !! I LOVE my P7. I have a 1st gen and I love it, so I can only imagine a 2nd gen with the flatter radius would be even better. Mine is a 4 string, but then again all I play are 4's.
