I would like to hear from those that have ordered a bass directly from Sire. How was the setup when it showed up? Any issues that forced a return? How did that go? Did sitting in the possession of UPS ground for 6 days or so affect the instrument at all due to extreme temp changes etc?

I posted a couple pages back. 1 good, 1 bad. Kept the bad one, but shouldn't have as I look more into it.

I really love my M5. The only thing is when I bought it, I was filling out my collection of 5-string basses. The band I was in performed several songs that required a 5-string bass, so it made perfect sense.

The same band has now changed both guitarists. The songs we sang that required 5-strings have been scrapped. 4 strings gets the job done. I just feel much more freedom when playing a 4-string bass. It's easier to mute and the neck is more comfortable in your hand. I use to think, why not have the extra string in case you need it. Now I would trade straight up for a 4-string swamp ash M5.

Playing 5-string has made me a better bass player. But I've been playing 4-stringers since 1979. It just feels like home.

I've been waiting on Sweetwater for damn near a year.
Seems like the Sire website has stock right now.
Chicago Music Exchange got some stock in and I got a V5 this past Saturday.
They have the Tobacco Sunburst V5R in stock.
Since the holidays are coming up, you should probably pull the trigger now.

Like I said in the post above, I took delivery of a V5 on Saturday. This is my first Sire.

I haven't had much time to tool around on it but here are my first impressions:
-The pickguard is scratched to hell and the control plate was smudged which means that this was probably being played in the store or in the luthier shop before it got shipped to me. Everything else looks fine. It's a beautiful instrument.
-The knobs are made of a cheaper grade of plastic than Fender knobs. I have an extra set of Fender knobs. Wonder if they'll fit?
-The neck profile is slim like a standard Jazz, which I like.
-Fast neck. Love the finish on it. You can get up and down effortlessly.
-Not gonna lie. I was worried about the tone. But tone wise, sounds great! Vintage Jazz tone. More output than my 40 anniv Squier Jazz. Brighter than both the Squier and my 2002 MIM (which is very dark but absolutely nails the 70's tone I want).
-Set up well out of the box. I need the action a little lower, though.
-I have no beef with the strings but I'll more than likely end up putting some Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys or GHS Bass Boomers on it.

I know these are not new observations but no stores that I've been to have had one out to try, so it was my first time ever touching a Sire. I've been wanting one since they debuted.
I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

There should be thin foils over the pickup guard and the control plate, at least from factory.. When I got my first Sire, I had the same impression but then noticed it was just the foils that looked "used", and all was OK when I removed the foils...

Has anyone turned down their pre-amp on their V7? Mine seems to be pretty hot. I have switched my amp to the active mode which seems to help. It's also affecting my pedals a bit. When I turn down the volume it seems to play nicer with my pedals.

The preamp is overly powerful on every active Sire bass guitars. 18 volts is overkill (IMO). But it is better to have more than you need than not enough.
