I am SO glad I'm not a professional bass player. And I'm SO glad that I've already made a next choice. And I'm SO glad the D5 doesn't have all of those options! Just color, and fretless or frets. Whew!

I'm just an amateur bass player, too, and I suspect it's typically us amateurs who love to focus on brands and model ranges and features and colors and compare options whereas pros would just take instruments that do their job and play...
The sire preamp is heavy handed but if you use restraint it's very usable. Low is very low high is pretty high and the mids are semi parametric.
Bonus is that there is a tone control that works in both passive and active mode so passive mode works exactly as you'd expect it to.

On the V5 being nicer than the V7, I think that's because it came after the V7 so it caught the roasted goodness? But they could have called it the V7P also like the V3 series. It is confusing. I've been down the rabbithole so I've got a good handle in what the models are and which are most interesting.
I am at the moment wrasslin with a choice between the V5R in green vs the D5, probably in vintage white. I think I'm letting go of the idea of the U5. I'd really like to be able to hold and play them all, best I can do locally is try a P and a J Fender or Squier. I've borrowed a low end Yamaha that's full scale, which is what helped stave off the need for the U5. That and I plan to get the kiddo that mini P. Ah plans. We'll see how things go.

I choose the D5 in antique white. Toooooooo good looking, and all I need. It WAS in competition with this ..

Totally impressed with U5 and decided to change original tuners to some MIM Fender style tuners. Also holes matched up real close also. Neck dive not as bad also. Just got a new D5 this past week,tobacco burst finish,and the roasted neck. Quality of these basses for the money is really impressive also. I changed strings on both the U5,and D5 to Ernie Ball Cobalt flatwound.
Has anyone experienced outrageous neck movement on their V5R? Mine has a mind of its own.... I set the relief to .009, leave it on the wall for a week in a relatively climate controlled environment, take it off the wall and it's bowed to .014! Noticed because the action raised up perceptively. I gotta say, I love my p5 but I kinda don't like this v5r. I mentioned this before as well, but I'm 99% sure the neck is dyed to appear way darker than whatever roasting/torrefication is happening at the factory or elsewhere.
I can only speak from my experience. Tons of people seem psyched on their v5rs. Every instrument is different, necks are made from different trees etc. - don't let my experience color your opinion! Also, this is the only bass I have which lives outside of a case. And while the room is relatively climate controlled, it's not perfect. The humidity does change +/- 10% but the temp stays the same- relatively. The neck is megaaaaa narrow down toward the nut, so I kind of expected it to not behave like a P.

Based on the examples I've seen, I'm quite sure that's the case. You can see it in one of @LowEndLobster 's videos where he changes out the tuners and accidentally removed a chunk of finish from the front of the headstock. You can see how much lighter the wood is under the finish. I think another TBer did the same thing on another bass in the classifieds.
I like the look and feel of roasted maple but some of the necks I've seen are way too dark to have come from roasting alone and are also aesthetically unappealing.
That V9 quilted maple is one beautiful bass... Pretty good price too...
I can't, my wife would cut them off, snip snip... Plus her birthday is next week!
I got all the upgrades finally for Zapp today so I got started, replaced the bridge and the tuners and removed the pickups and the electronics. I'll get on with the rest tomorrow when its daylight and I can see better, I may need to do some soldering despite the solderless preamp. If I really prefer series wiring to parallel (no I'm not going to the extent of adding a switch) I may just solder up the wires and heatshrink them.
I was very impressed with Sires work on the cavity. Actual shielding paint throughout and shield wires run from screws under each pickup to a star ground screw in the cavity to the jack ground. Never seen that degree of care on any of my other basses.

Go for it. The V9 is everything you want in a bass. The looks, the sound, the playability, and mine has got the weight, only 3.9 kg. Only thing I changed are the tuners, put some black Gotoh res-o-lite GB528 on it.

Yes. I'm definitely impressed with the electronics assembly. Big difference from other manufacturers.
That was just splintered clear coat, no chunk actually came out and no bare wood was revealed.
I stand corrected. Here's a picture of the Sire V5 24 in the classifieds with a significant chunk missing from the headstock that I was referring to as well.
