Thanks, @oren ! That's the first Sire fretless I ever played, back at a GTG in Chicago some 7 or so years ago. Fond memories, and led to the collection of 4 Sires I have now!
I remember that GTG! That was a really fun day! I brought both my Roscoe and my Sire and I was surprised that people were more interested in the Sire.
US Folks in need of a pickguard:
Sharing for 4 string P5 / P5R folks - check out Precision Guitar for pickguards. He made me a sweet tort one but can do other colors of course. Not affiliated - but that is my natural p5r body with a D5 neck of all things in the listing for the
demo guard.
No V5/V7/V3 guards yet - but he is cool to work with if you send a tracing or better - send the actual guard. He's pretty quick and local to me. I have purchased multiple pickguards from him and all were quality and dressed up my instruments.

Hi Sire people, I am planning to buy a Sire 5 string fretless, my options are either the

or the

on Thomann (there are none nearby, so I cannot try one live).
I know the difference between the two are that the v7 has active (switchable) electronics but I read that the v5 has better overall tone, is there any truth to this (or videos comparing both fretless with the same setup)?
Also, I read that the stacked knobs on the v7 break easily, are poorly made and make it hard to fit the bass in some cases, is that true? (also, if anyone has bass case suggestions that fit feel free to tell).
Last but not least, the v5 has a maple fretboard, does that cause any durability problem since these are fretless?

The folks who had problems with pot durability *usually* broke them while pulling the stock knobs off (which are a TIGHT friction fit), speaking as someone who's read every post in this thread since it started.
Not to say that these folks are all chowderheads who just weren't careful enough - the knobs ARE on there pretty tightly! - or that the pots are otherwise indestructible (they clearly aren't!). Just saying that the majority of pot damage that people have reported here occurred while swapping knobs. I don't think anyone here has mentioned that they are hard to fit into some cases though? The Sire gig bag is well-regarded, I know folks have mentioned some other options, including hard cases, over the years, but I don't recall the suggestions other than a vague, hand-wavy recollection of "Gator" (which is always a safe choice on cases lolol).In terms of which has a "better tone"... not to punt that, but "better tone" is super subjective, what I can't stand, you might love and vice versa. I'm going out on a limb and will say that the tone difference between a V5 and a V7 are down to fretboard materials and... yeah. And... I know this is TalkBass heresy right here... frankly, when I do hear the difference in fretboards, it is 100% someone playing solo, never in a gig or in a band or otherwise mixed with other folks. The differences you'll see with active vs. passive, string choice, pre-amp settings, etc. are going to be 100x more noticeable than an apples to apples comparison of the V5 and the V7 in passive mode. Again... that's just me and my ears and my *personal* opinion.

I do use the Gator 4G series dual bass bag for my V7 and V3 (which come with me to EVERY one of my Zeppelin tribute band gigs, 2X-3x/mo). One thing I will say is that the V7's volume/tone stack has loosened at the stem nut more than once, and since it rides in the bag's back slot, it's the one that's up against the back of the other bass. So clearly, it does see some force as time passes.
The most important thing here, is that there are two Sire basses in the dual bass bag, and that you aren't letting them get dangerous close to something like... say... a Stingray, or worse, a Fender. Bass cooties are a very real thing, and the Fenders are the WORST about them.

That F10 five string might be what I'm looking for, especially if it's neck-through. I'll be interested to see what the price and average weight is.
I just pulled the trigger yesterday and bought the v5 alongside a thomann hard case, since I wont be using the case for transport but just for storage, thanks still (even with that 70 euros case my budget was at its limit
).
I've been dying for Sire to do a take on a Stingray, and it looks like they've finally done it! Although the body style definitely looks more Lakland to me. But I do assume the humbucker is in the Stingray "sweet spot."
