Skateboarding anyone???

I could do it in less than a minute--so not a lot of fun.

And I've injured fingers & arms doing fun stuff-but it was stuff I could do & enjoy.
I've tried skateboarding and just standing on it is courting disaster in my case.
I agree that starting off at an older age is very very difficult.
When you learn young it's like riding a bike, it stays with you. Its easy to spot people that start off older, they look stiff and wobbly instead of relaxed and flowing.

Case and point....my wife.

Fresh tune up. Tighten loose bolts. Check bearings. Perfect beat to crap bushings.
Check!!!!!

popped the caps off the bearings

Why!?

 Yes, I realize this is a thing, but unless you're using really crappy or damaged bearings, the shields shouldn't effect performance - like, not even a little, but removing them does let tons of crap in that definitely will effect performance in short order.

Shield removal is like speed holes for skateboards. ;) Unless the goal is to just make the board louder, which I guess could have some benefits in certain circumstances...

Ahhhh yes. The eternal caps on the bearings issues.

Ok, my 2 cents.

In my 25 years of skating and working in a skateshop. This is my personal experience.

Caps keep the dust and crap inside the bearing.

The rotation makes all the big "crap" fly away. As for the dust, it accumulates regardless, add a little bearing oil once a month and they are like new.

I've been popping the caps since forever. Tried both ways and my bearings lasted longer and rolled better.

Ever cleaned a set of capped bearings so full of crap they didnt even spin???
That never ever happened to me with popped caps.

Now I don't even need to pop the caps since I ride Bronson raw bearing.

Imo....ime.....ymmv....etc

All fair, don't take me too seriously on any of this, skateboarding is like bass playing - we all have our personal tricks, ticks, and rituals.

Like do I need fancy over-engineered machined washers outside my bushings? No, but I like the way they look... Yes, we’re still talking about washers here. :smug:

None taken. Popped bearing caps is nothing. I just love skating and sharing stories.

You should have met some of the OCD skaters, its a miracle they made it out the door.
One dude counted the rotations on his kingpins!!!!! We usually left him alone in a corner with a T tool for an hour or so.

Or boiling bushings, running over them with a car........

One dude tried to return defective trucks (they where fine) cuz he said he couldn’t kick flip anymore with his new purchase.......owner got sick of him and kicked out of the store.

I’ll be honest, I think the reason why it freaks me out so much is because my biggest fear is of locking up a wheel due to sharp debris. It’s a rare occurrence, especially so to the point where I’ve been thrown, but it does happen and I’ve basically just come to expect it as inevitable over the course of so many miles.

Chalk it up to an extension of that phobia, but I just picture a piece of debris getting in there in just the right way as I’m at speed… :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

I'd be wayyyyy more scared of a crack or big pebble.

The bearing crown prevents anything big from locking up the wheel.

With my 75-80mm wheels (and soon to be 85mm) there aren't too many cracks that give me much pause, but yeah - even a medium-sized jagged rock, jammed into the pavement at just the right angle... that's exactly what I'm talking about. :poop:
Ya, that one is part of the game. It IS going to happen sometime.
I go flying maybe ....hmmmm once a year cuz of that. My left knee has so much scar tissu its not even funny.

Yup, I'd say that's about right for me as well. Good times ha!

That's why it's a phobia I guess, doesn't have to be rational. :)

I started using the standard Zealous built-ins a few years ago and haven't looked back. Are they the absolute best? Beats me, but they work really well for my needs, have an interesting sales pitch as far as the self-healing aspect is concerned, and best of all - are relatively cheap! :D

Expensive 100$ bearing are absolutely unnecessary for skating.
I remember doing the calculations a few years back.
Fastest a skater goes on a long board is about.....110kmh.....ishhhh
Like max +\- 5000 rpms

Imagine the speed you’d have to go to get to 20 000 rpm rated bearings made for industrial machines,

Even the durability thing is just publicity. Get some 20$ reds, go skate and buy a cold one instead. Even some pros ride mini logos.
