Snowed in... in Texas

texaswinter.jpg

The only 24 hour delay I ever had occurred there. I'm sorry you have to deal with O'Hare. It's not fun or funny. And that damn music they play in those tunnels makes me want to strangle myself! If Purgatory has a soundtrack, that's it.

....I agree...I hear it at least weekly!!!

...and those lights!!!! argh! Disco retro...with a touch of hell.

We were in O'Hare about 10 years ago and somebody was running the audio from a porno through the PA for about 10 minutes. It was one of the funniest things ever.

I notice you had to keep the camera pointed up so it would not show the snow under the palm trees - we're on to your Hollywood film tricks here. The drifts are probably halfway up that light pole.

Worse yet - it is actually RAINING in Los Angeles today, so my stock photo is not only deceptive but a straight-up LIE. Don't know why I felt compelled to lie -- guess it's just an L.A. thing.

Hi,

This certainly seems like one of those "stir-crazy" threads.

It was raining pretty good after my gig last night. This is what greeted us as we loaded out.

How does that song go? "It never rains in Southern California..." Well, it hasn't rained much. We could use a lot more. There's been very little snow pack in the mountains and there is talk of water rationing. I wouldn't mind if you guys sent some of that white stuff this way. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Your confession inspires me... so I'm gonna come clean too. The pic of my tractor was from last February, as in 2014.

That is a three-foot wooden yard stick stuck in the snow by the front tire.

When I was a teen I used to smoke some weed and go to O'Hare to ride the conveyors in the tunnels for fun. Of course that was in 1985, and they were brand new, but still a bit pathetic.

I once drove from San Antonio to Austin for a concert in snow (not ice) and there was at least one car spun out every mile the whole way. Maybe 100 cars in 70 miles. Too funny.

Hi,

..But it pours, man it pours; and then the mudslides begin, but for some reason they are not in the song.

I just heard an emergency broadcast system alert for Oxnard and surrounding areas concerning flash floods in the recent burn area. Mud slides are bad news. A section of PCH has just opened up after 7 months due to a mud slide. Let's be careful out there. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

GEEEE 38ºC/100ºF ... OMGawrsh ...what did our ancestors do before electricity and airconditioning... :meh:
And still the human race carries on, procreating and filling up the big blue marble... :bored:

I love how the southerners are trying to flip it 'round... People have been living in sweltering sweaty humid places since shortly after dawn of time, same goes for the "frozen wastelands", all without the technological marvels we have today. We adapt, we make do, it's what we do.

WHAT GALLS ME is when we have the capacity and technology to do something about it ... and DON'T.

Hong Kong has aircon 'cause it's hot n humid here 80% of the year and nice 18% and 2% it's frick'n cold (for here).

IF HonKers used INSULATION in the poured-concrete construction process then the Cooling Bills wouldn't be so freakin' expensive and that little cold snap around Chinese New Year (thankfully we had very mild CNY this year, unusual), when it gets to ... *gasp* ... 11ºC/52ºF... why then you'd be able to heat your home with the piddly little space heaters they have here which, without insulation, are about as good as a hamster blowing through a straw.

The Better Half: "Honey, it's getting chilly"
The Other Half: "Okay, Hon, I'll go beat the hamster ... "

Hong Kong has only once recorded a freezing temp of 0ºC, and even so that was at the highest point in the area, Dai Mo Shan (Big Hat Mountain.

Oh man, all this talk about winter and whining reminds me of this radio caller we had in Saskatchewan a month or two ago. It is hilarious. We sampled the audio and are trying to integrate it into one of our songs, take a listen, feel his pain.

Edit: NSFW ...strong language

Saskatchewan winter too much for one CBC Radio listener - Saskatchewan - CBC News

That short video clip should be required viewing for everyone in Vancouver, Seattle, Texas etc... It shows that you can drive in adverse conditions and millions of Canadians, Northern Yanks, Scandinavians etc. do so every winter all winter long...

PS: Doll, I like how you always refer to Saskatchewan, like it's a small specific place of its own and not a province of 651,900 km² (251,700 sq miles), nearly 3 times the size of "Great" Britian (229,848 km²/88,745 sq miles). So where in SK are you? I was born in Kindersley, before moving to Saskatoon and points beyond SK's borders.

Hints to do with all that snow:

If you're an instrument collector, not only basses, you can get your bucket out and collect that abundance of snow, and take it indoors and fill your humidifiers with it! And start to humidify your rooms. This melted snow doesn't consist of any residue of lime, chalk or whatever. Don't forget that as fast it is below freezing point, the air becomes very dry. Using tap water causes a thin veil or coat of lime on your walls, and instruments.

Provided that you actually use and own a humidifier. But that snow (melted) is considerably better than any tap water. You can even save it for later on. Don't wait until the snow has become dirty from the surroundings, that's bad. Get it now! Fresh and newly fallen!

Those pics reminds me, they could've just as well been taken in my backyard. However, as we hit the month of March now, it all has gone to above zero point and is melting rapidly. Next week we'll have 12-15 + centidegrees, they say. It's that North Atlantic Oscillation that has done its negative phase for you guys. We have the positive phase in Europe so that "bay" of warm winds are coming our way. However, not much sun in there, just grey all of the time.

I grew up in Regina , know your pain , someone also said what if people in cold climes got hit with 110 f? in Saskatchewan they do in the summer , and a lot if not , the majority, of houses do not have AC. I remember when I was growing up , there were times it was 85-90 at midnight in the house , we live through it.

Pilsner air conditioning and plenty of it when the mercury hits above 90 lol , Saskatchewan members know what im talkin bout

Don't forget that Dingwall basses are made in Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). They have to be made to take that beating.

If you have that much snow, that everything is covered in newly fallen snow, and you have a home studio, make use of the situation and start to record. There's NO better sound insulation than snow. You'll lower the signal to noise ratio by several decibels... until your neighbor ruining your take with that snow blower ... :sour:

Hints to get rid of that snow on top of cars, house roofs and so on:

Bring out your most badass 5 str electric bass with a low b (Dingwall, for example) and plug it in to you most powered high watt subwoofer, and let it rip for a minute or two.

You'll start a local avalanche, and everything will shake loose from the top of the cars, and roof. Make sure though, that you're not inside that house, you'll definitely be covered in avalanche debris. TIP OF THE DAY! Bring kids and pets to a safe area though. You'll have fun at the same time getting rid of that snow, while playing, and not need to back breaking shoveling, or tedious long winded snow blower runs.

For the climately inclined here's the culprit:

North Atlantic oscillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For those who hasn't the patience to dwell on it, here's a quote among others regarding the cold 2009-2010 winter in Europe, and when it was very warm in US/Canada:

"In the north western part of the Atlantic, both of these winters were mild, especially 2009-2010, which was the record warmest in Canada. The winter of 2010-2011 was particularly above normal in the northern Arctic regions of the country.[20]"

But we had arctic and polar climate down to Italy. It fluctuates in waves.

I like the way you think Honch.

@tmdazed :: Yeah, I grew up without airconditioning, too, and when a friend's parents installed it at his house, I asked "Why?"
I think Alberta and Manitoba are the same as SK, heLL the majority of Canada, not a lot of houses will have aircon. I could be wrong, it's not like I've taken a census.
My parents still don't have aircon, same house I grew up in.
