Snowed in... in Texas

Right now I'm glad that here in Calgary AB we're having a mild winter. Seems that while were having an okay time, people further down south are getting part of what we usually get. Mind you, we still drive after a blizzard hits since many of us own winter/snow tires.

The only downside is less snow in the mountains for skiing! :D

A former Chicagoan here that's now living in Austin, TX. I'm one of the few that actually loves wintertime and snow, and yes I was ecstatic and went out during both Snowmaggedon and Chiberia (Chicagoans will know what these mean). It's actually kind of funny to me how people here in ATX are freaking out about temperatures in the 30's but since the city doesn't even seem to put down sand on roadways for 30 degree weather I guess I can understand; people here are horrible enough drivers on warm dry days so adding in ice and lack of preparation on Texas hills is just asking for problems.

Ice, on the other hand, is no joke. I lived in Oklahoma City while getting my degree and have seen what happens when two inches of ice or more accumulates on power lines, trees, roads and homes. Power lines snap, trees are ripped apart, roads are impassable and some homes suffer severe structural damage. I got lucky and only lost power once for a couple of days, so I just moved food from my fridge to the balcony, made up a fire in the fireplace and broke out the bourbon. I was also fortunate to have a grocery store two miles away so I would just walk through the snow with a large duffle bag on my back, watching people's trucks bounce into each other like bumper cars.

This is at my house 20 mins west of Winston Salem, NC
Not a big thing. I spent 20 yrs in VT.

Winter February 2015 (3).JPG
House Second Blizzard February 15, 2015 (2).JPG
I live 25 miles south of Boston. We had over 8 feet of snow in the first 23 days of February. The snow in my front yard is up to my shoulders. We are expecting another 4 to 6 inches tonight. Two pictures of the front of my house. The first was taken February 8, the second was exactly one week later, February 15. Notice the height of the snow near the lamp post. The lamp is 6 1/2 feet high. I can currently only see the top foot and a half.

Actually warming up enough here in Houston again to be outside in a T-shirt. Not complaining about "Winter" here, mind you (I grew up in the midwest on the Great Lakes so I understand actual Winter). You wanna hear a bunch of Texans whine? Let a hurricane come through and knock out power for a few days. You'd think the world was ending!

Condolences there, sincerely. I ordered a set of strap buttons for a project bass from someone in the Boston area not long ago. They didn't show up for a while and I was starting to wonder what happened when it struck me where they were coming from. Duh!

Don't do any snow diving out your second story window, por favor.

/actually saw that on the news not long ago

I'm in Syracuse NY; always at or near the top of the lists of heavy snowfall cities in the U.S. This winter was pretty strange. We had less than average snow for most of the season, and then got hit by record snowfall and the lowest temperatures on record for the last month or so. There have been at least 3 big traffic pile-ups on I-81 here in the last few weeks. The city neglected to plow my street a few times in February, which is very uncommon. When they do plow, you can't get out of your driveway because the plows leave a drift across the end where it meets the street. I go to work at 06:00, so I normally get up at 05:00. Takes an extra 15 minutes or so just to dig out the car, start it up, shovel while it warms up, and get it out on the street.

High average snow we can handle, but getting it all at once is bad. My snow blower froze up, and I was back to shoveling for a few days until I figured out how to thaw it out. It's getting better though; not much new snow this week, and no "black ice" so far. Some fun!

Forecasters kept muttering that three-letter word (ice), but I'm happy to say that we simply got a 4" blanket of crystals. :) Driving around my small town in snow is fairly safe. Columbia, MO (where I work) is another story. The University of Missouri attracts all sorts of drivers without the first clue on how to adapt to slick conditions. :rollno:
Hey, we're "neighbors"!!!

I live in Saskatchewan Canada and some years we can have snow for 6 months, we really only have two proper seasons, winter and summer. Anyways. I went to college in Vancouver and it snowed a little bit once and I was amazed and how the city just shut down. I remember driving around and only passing one other vehicle, a big lifted truck from Alberta. It's true they aren't prepared or used to that type of thing so I'm glad they stay off the roads.
I grew up in Regina , know your pain , someone also said what if people in cold climes got hit with 110 f? in Saskatchewan they do in the summer , and a lot if not , the majority, of houses do not have AC. I remember when I was growing up , there were times it was 85-90 at midnight in the house , we live through it.

Pilsner air conditioning and plenty of it when the mercury hits above 90 lol , Saskatchewan members know what im talkin bout
