Snowed in... in Texas

The problems with "winter" weather in Texas are very different that up north. It's not the snow.. we don't get a lot of that, but we do get a LOT of ICE and repeated temperature fluctuations (above/below) freezing, which compounds the problem.
  • bridges/overpasses freeze quickly (same as up north)
  • the bridges/roads are sanded here... not treated to melt snow (as that destroys the road surfaces used here).
  • Folks don't have a clue how to drive on snow, never mind ice (I came home from Fri nights gig passing all the eejits driving in the "ice grooves" at 10 mph, by driving ON the fresh snow in between those ruts and not worrying about lanes.. yes, I drove my F150 safely!)
  • Temps will get above freezing during the day, folks will drive and heat the snow/ice into slush, which then RE-FREEZES as the temps drop at night, and then TXDot will spread more sand on top of that.. and next day the cycle repeats, so one gets VERY DEEP ICE ruts on bridges after a couple of days.

The picture below (taken Dec 2013) looks like a typical accumulation from about 4" of snowfall. Quite a lot of snow for North Texas. It's about 100 yds from my front door to that bridge and the road up the hill behind the trees... No big deal really... but.... That's not snow!!
That's FOUR INCHES of solid ICE... could have played hockey on it.. and my location is slap-bang in the MIDDLE of DFW area (8 miles west of DFW airport), not even the outskirts (like Denton) of the metroplex. You can imagine what that does to travel conditions, schools and business being closed... etc.

Umm... Seems he has some basis for the opinion this time.

Actually, he didn't. He was lucky he didn't get in an accident the way he was driving. He could have stocked up before the storm before everyone else, but could not wait for his fix. People out driving around just makes everything take longer for the plow crews, which costs a fortune in overtime, great higher taxes now, thanks neighbor. If everyone in Boston had the same attitude as that guy, the city would have ground to a halt for weeks, there would have been abandoned cars everywhere in the middle of every road. All it takes is a handful of drivers to completely screw everything up.

I think you can blame the cold in N Texas on my X-wife ..! she moved there from NE Ohio ... I know it's cold where ever she is ..! still sounding like a country song ..! ha

I'm down near Tampa , FL ... started cleaning up the pool today ...

Another thing is that the snow was followed by sleet, then snow, then sleet.
The combination makes loosy snowballs and worse driving conditions.
Today we'er a bit above freezing.
Enough to make sure the remanining snow will be all ice.

On the brighter side, my lovely wife found a can of beans and some rice.
Cold is better when you'er not hungey.

We just got barley enough snow on Mt. Hood To ski on, normally there's 8 or 10 feet by now the weather here has been like California this year it should be pouring down rain and it going to be a draught year I think. It's sunny so we're going for a drive in the Z3 for a nice Sunday afternoon drive and dinner. I feel for you guys I really do but I don't miss the cold and snow one bit.

Sorry about your snow-in. I think I barely escaped getting snowed in today leaving from Buffalo. We got delayed for an hour but we made it out. Thank God! Had I got snowed in, I might have been taken to a rubber room.

The only 24 hour delay I ever had occurred there. I'm sorry you have to deal with O'Hare. It's not fun or funny. And that damn music they play in those tunnels makes me want to strangle myself! If Purgatory has a soundtrack, that's it.
