Snowed in... in Texas

Gotta love the FAR north....I spent summer in Leningrad ( still USSR) and it did not get dark for week....

Yes, you may figure out how the muslims may have some slight problem if their RAMADAN happens to be in the end of June. Ramadan means they can't eat during the day, when the sun's up.... pretty good fasting diet if you'd ask me, and they drop a few pounds. If Antarctic ever becomes inhabitable...even today there's a slight gnarl from them up north in Sweden. Still too light at the end of August. The sun goes down alright, but just for a 2-3 hrs.

I'm in Oklahoma. I've been out all three days in it. This morning was by far the worst. It's been raining almost all morning and the road is a sheet of solid ice. I only live 3 miles from work, and I almost met a ditch on the way home today. To be fair a supercharged, rear drive car with shallow gears and snow packed summer tires probably isn't the best vehicle to be out in, but hey you get around in what you got.

What's funny there is a long straight away that leads to the plant I work at, and there is always a hero that has to pass everyone. Sure enough, some genius in a jacked up F350. He made it as far as the left lane, tried to accelerate and humbly made his way back into right lane.

As I recall the sun went down it Lenigrad....it just stayed twilight all night. It was the only time at I was there that any thing really happened at night. The Soviets used to shut everything down....nothing to do.

The thing is that when the snow hits those areas, it's a different kind so to speak. Like the people of Greenland have 17 different words for snow and no actual word for snow. Even if I moved there with my 4wd car, studded tires, and experience in driving in snow, I think it wouldnt "behave" the same. It still would be a nuisance, and annoying. Moreso than up here. Given all other things equal. But if your municipality isn't made/built for that from the start on, and it only occurs every other leap year then it's understandable. You can't hedge your bets, for every occasion. The thing is with the other way around is that if we up here got that tropic summer, our houses are sturdy enough built to withstand that too. It takes quite a while for that heat to creep inside too, just as well as it takes it for leave it later on.

The only thing that would take a serious hit are the crops.

Feel for you. Spent 16 years in Ithaca where we got the cold but the the snow. This winter is nearly an average Buffalo winter here in CT which is saying something.
Ithaca is beautiful! Yes, I have a number of clients in New England and I know you're having a Buffalo-esque winter. The thing is, we have legendary snow removal capabilities. Even when we got 6 feet in 72 hours back in Snowvember, the roads were largely cleared within 24 hours.

You cannot comprehend the madness caused by other drivers.....You could be driving a SnowCAt and still take 3 hours to drive two miles.....People just abandon cars in the middle of the roads by the hundreds. The Governor declares emergency and no one is even allowed on the roads....

This was the screen shot I took couple days ago.. look at all those car accidents..

Do, do, do, lookin' out my backdoor...

Forecasters kept muttering that three-letter word (ice), but I'm happy to say that we simply got a 4" blanket of crystals. :) Driving around my small town in snow is fairly safe. Columbia, MO (where I work) is another story. The University of Missouri attracts all sorts of drivers without the first clue on how to adapt to slick conditions. :rollno:

I live in Saskatchewan Canada and some years we can have snow for 6 months, we really only have two proper seasons, winter and summer. Anyways. I went to college in Vancouver and it snowed a little bit once and I was amazed and how the city just shut down. I remember driving around and only passing one other vehicle, a big lifted truck from Alberta. It's true they aren't prepared or used to that type of thing so I'm glad they stay off the roads.

Even around here where people have tons of experience driving in bad weather, they get amnesia for the first few storms of the year. The one rule everyone forgets right away is that brakes don't work on ice, at all. And 4WD is only good up to 40MPH. So if you are driving a full size SUV and trying to go 50MPH on the highway, you are a colossal idiot. Yet there they are, every year, thinking they are more important than everyone else, trying to pass everyone including the snow plows.

Gotta love the travel bans too. During a recent one, I'm out clearing my driveway during blizzard conditions, look up, and see a minivan going down the road in my direction. There is a statewide order to keep all motor vehicles off all roads at this time, FYI. About 10 minutes later, they drive back in the other direction with a paper bag on the front seat next to them. They made a run to the liquor store down the street. So it was more important to them to get their booze than follow the law, probably would have been a 20 minute walk. I believe that is the same conspiracy theorist who is convinced the government is coming for us. He makes me laugh.
