So about the chimp attack in Conn. It's getting creepy..

It's not surprising. A couple years ago there was a couple in California who were savagely attacked and mutilated by one or more chimps at a shelter for primates. They were visiting a chimpanzee that they used to keep as a pet, and they brought a birthday cake and gifts for it. The chimp(s) that attacked apparently were jealous of the attention the humans were giving the onetime pet.

Chimpanzees can be very cute and fascinating, but they can be extremely dangerous, too.

Try petting a hippopatomus, Cape Buffalo, or rhinocerous!:eek: For that matter, just mosy into a pasture and pet some bull and see what happens.:D

Good points. My parents live on a small farm where they board several horses and I've become somewhat familiar with horsemanship, though I don't ride. It's amazing how many people are hurt by horses. They intentionally throw riders and they often kick people without warning and I've even seen them try to push their owners into fences or walls with their bodies. They're portrayed as the cutest, most harmless animals around, like big bunny rabbits, but they are actually dangerous.

and a cat.

All but the cat are considered exotic by most people, but none are potentially deadly. I really don't see a reason why I shouldn't own them, since not one of them is as potentially dangerous as a domesticated dog.

Mind you, I firmly believe that dangerous animals should not be pets. Venemous snakes or large constrictors, the more venomous spiders (all are venomous but the vast majority are no worse than a bee sting), chimps, tigers... Animals such as these should be regulated and a licence required to own one.

I guess I agree about allowing people to own non-dangerous, and small exotic pets, but only if they do not pose a threat to the environment if let loose. Even something as common as a cat or rabbit has been known to ruin the local ecology of places. Right now South Florida is suffering because people simply threw out Pythons, Boas, and Anacondas which have really taken a toll on local fauna as large as deer and alligators. It way too easy for irresponsible people to get animals that they don't have a clue about managing.

Last I heard it had ripped off her face and permanently destroyed her hands.

The transcript for the police said "there's a guy here without a face. Something ripped his face off."

And she sustained not only life threatening, but life changing, injuries to her hands and face.

Sorry, just had to pull this. As if humans, given proper circumstances aren't as savage as any ape or cat?

Sure, chimps can be savage, therefore we correct our thinking and say they're really wild animals, which they are. And they're just so nearly human.

I heard a report (hearsay) that she lost both eyes, her nose, and most of her jaw along with a good part of her hands. Absolutely terrible. :scowl:

You might run faster than a chimp on two feet, but on all fours they can do 25mph. That's a 9 second 100m sprint we're talking about. Getting around using two limbs is a lot slower than using all of them.
