So close...

I was at the local mom'n'pop music store to get some strings and they had one of these on the wall.

Squier Classic Vibe '70s Jazz Bass V

I was very pleasantly pleased with the bass. Played very nice, good neck, the B felt good, not too loose. Sound was undecided - it had new new strings so it was bright and metallic as all get out. Needs flats.

Except the one they had was ash and weighed what seemed like 20 pounds. H-E-A-V-Y.

No way.

I'm not a fiver player and this one felt nice. Less than $500. If it wasn't so darned heavy, I'd have been sorely tempted.
