So, If I don't play a Precision, I'm not a real bass player?

I was thinking about switching to German.

Why do you feel French bow is for sadists?

Not an argument, I'm actually interested if my suspicion that German might put the hand in a stronger position is correct or not.

For me it came down to comfort. When I took up DB I had a rental bass for 6 months trial before I committed to the instrument. It came with a french bow, so my instructor taught the Simandal method and the "proper" french bow grip.

After about 5 or 6 weeks of lessons I was getting cramps in my right hand from the bow hold. My instructor's personal preference for himself was German bow however, so he let me try his bow. It was an epiphany of sorts, and that night after the lesson I orederd the basic Gollihur rosewood German bow. No more hand cramps.

When I started playing bass in 1977 I wanted the same bass that my favorites used. Lynott, Deacon, Rainey, Jamerson, Hope, Murray, Passarelli, etc. all used one so it's what I bought.

Makes sense. When I did the bass viol recording for my band, my hand was cramping like crazy by the end of the session and partially numb.

I started thinking about switching because, looking at hand position of French and German bow styles, it occurred to me that German bow hand position is almost like a pistol grip, which I suspected might cause less fatigue than French style.

I think I'm definitely going to switch, now. Thanks for the info.

You'll never get a gig without a P bass.

The odd thing is that the times I used a Fender, I thought I nailed the audition and someone else showed up with a borrowed bass and got the gig. :(
I don't own a P-bass and I play in three bands.
