So... that happened...

Musical delusion is weird.

A guitar player friend i sometimes try to jam with can be very good, but usually isn’t because he is shot about preparing.

So we’ll get together, and me and the drummer are super-prepared, but sound like crap because guitar guy is literally all over the place.

Then afterward he will say stuff like “we sounded pretty good, we should book a gig”.

And we’re like “huh?”

The ironic part is that we always record the rehearsals, but no matter how much we encourage it, he is the only ond who never listens to them.

I guess he would rather just rely on his pleasant memory of it, than face reality and get better.

It seems weirdly intentional. Like if I didn’t want admit being out of shape so i remove all mirrors from my home and keep tellng myself I’m buff. Actually I may start doing that.

The band was horrible. I mean really really bad. Timing issues, missed notes, wrong notes, and the singer was all over the scale except where he needed to be. I really really hope it was late in the night and they were just drunk...

Do these people really not know that they sound so bad???

Apparently not:

I was always told that if you can't say something nice about or to someone don't say anything at all, but...

I was sitting here bored this morning and decided to check Facebook to look through the dumb crap posted by people I really don't know and the latest in targeted advertising when I saw a post from one of my "friends" that has a working band. Well, they do play gigs...

That post is a video of their performance recorded on someone's cell phone. I cannot emphasize to you just how embarrassed I am for both the band and the people there that had to listen to them. They were playing Eric Clapton's awesome classic Wonderful Tonight only it was neither awesome nor wonderful. In fact, it was so bad I couldn't listen to the complete train wreck video. I skipped to the end to see if it would get any better only to be slightly shocked by how bad it must have been.

I have been invited on several occasions to attend one of their gigs... I think I'll continue to pass so I don't have to endure the pain of telling them the truth if asked... It was almost as bad as the church guitar player that cannot tune his $2500.00 Taylor guitar.

I was briefly in a band like this. They were close by, seemed like good guys, and for some reason had lots of gigs booked. But they were terrible. I mean, really, really bad...like 10th grade battle of the bands bad. I offered some suggestions on how they might suck less, but soon realized it was a futile effort, because they thought they were awesome. The last straw was when the tone deaf singer and guitar player who was proud to admit that he thought theory stifles creativity, wanted to cover “Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith. I begged them not to consider such a ludicrous idea since there was no way they were going to be able to handle the vocal harmonies. They insisted. So, after watching them struggle to harmonize, I broke down each person parts, taught it to them and contemplated suicide as they continued to sound like dying whale song. This is all before they attempted to sing and play it at the same time. Again, I told them as tactfully as I could that maybe they should reconsider that particular song. The guitar player wouldn’t hear of it. Curious to see just how shameless they really were, I played the gig where the song would be featured. It was worse than I could have imagined. The expressions on people’s faces told the story. The rest of the band considered it a triumph. I quit right after we unloaded the gear after the gig. The band was shocked that I didn’t want to play with them anymore. I told them I just didn’t have the time, what with work demands and stuff. The reality was that I didn’t want it to get out that I was in this band. I thought I might never get another gig.

I suddenly feel better about what I'm doing with my life, both musically and... everything else...

Of the first two, unsure how they could play... THAT... with a huge 'MUSIC' sign behind them...

... then I realized they were playing to a packed house of two... pumpkins. From the perspective of the pumpkins, this may have resembled some form of sonic wave, possibly helping their growth cycle as outcast vegetables...

... at one point in the video, you can almost see and hear the gourd-groupies raise their stem in the air, and say, 'Heeeeyyyyyyy!'

Regarding, the third? I would have bought it, if only the singer/guitarist had thrown in a little Axel-Shuffle... a little closer to the edge of the stage...

I'm one of those people & I somehow built up a false sense that I sounded ok.
I've since came to realize I was wrong, so I only play when no one is home & I don't record myself & definitely don't post any videos or audio of my playing.

Congratulations!!!

You've hit upon the perfect formula to guarantee your playing will never improve. :roflmao:

I was thinking the same thing. But a grindcore trio from the U.K. and a group in Washington beat us to it!

Guys- the solution here is simple. One of you take Kruger Dunning, the other take Kunning Druger and play it off with all authority and lack of self awareness that the effect implies.

There’s enough smartest stupidity go around gentlemen, no need to be dismayed!

I think Kunning Druger is a cooler band name than Dunning Kruger. Unfortunately, I suspect most people who saw the name before hearing it would pronounce it more like Kunning Drudger.

Actually, that's not so bad either.

that where the "paper bag & sunglasses" disguise comes in - "the unknown bass player"

I don't suppose you could re-post the video here? I'd like to see it.
I could never share the shame of that "performance" and still live with myself...

After making myself go back and check out the video again, I saw that the band was not even there. The vocalist was singing to recordings of his band complete with backing vocals. (Which he probably did himself - Can anyone say EGO...) He was using some sort of karaoke setup. It's OK though. It was a private Mardi Gras party and those folks paid 25 bucks a head to be there.

One band I was in used a cheap, portable cassett recorder....
We did that once... only it wasn't practice and the recorder was on a table in the back corner of the bar. The guitar player still has that cassette tape. It really sounded awesome considering how it was recorded and that we only got together at my house once as a band to practice.
