There are VERY few on this website who could not benefit from more instruction, at some level or another.

You never stop needing to learn!!

I remember somebody on the DB side mentioning this, in relation to the fact that they had heard of a very well-known Jazz pro who had been playing for over 40 years at the top level, but who was taking some time off, to go and have lessons with a teacher!

The Warwick Corvette $$ is very much on my GAS list. However that said, if I wanted the StingRay sound, I would buy the StingRay. Actually from what I have read on this and other froums, the Bongo is the best thing since sliced bread. Remember, if you buy the Warwick enjoy it for what it is and forget that it doesn't sound like a SR. People might be saying someday, "how do I get Nick's sound?"

Please Nick, tell me it's not true...

Paul ain't no Wooten, but he's a musician and a songwriter, first and foremost. Don't ask yourself "can I play better/faster than he does?" but ask yourself "could I write just one timeless hit like Paul did many times?".

There are probably a few thousands better bassists than Paul, but very very few can match his musical genius. It's all about the song, not showing off your dexterity on an instrument.

Nobody is saying you are a bad player, Nick. They're saying your approach is wrong.

And besides. If you take "needing lessons" as in insult, you are DEFINITELY taking the wrong approach. There are VERY few on this website who could not benefit from more instruction, at some level or another. Some need basic technique instruction, others need direction in the fine nuances of theory. He was just making a comment that money spent on lessons will improve your tone far more than money spent on gear ever will.

+1. There are guys on this board with wicked chops and still go in and get lessons from guys with even wickeder (is that even a word?) chops.

I don't take lessons personally, but i give them for free to anyone who asks. And in my opinion whether your the student or the teacher, your gonna learn something each and everytime.. ya dig?

lol..but yeah...there was a new shop opened up just around the corner from me, more brass and woodwind than anything else, i went to check out what they had, mostly sx and samick....a few G&L tributes and an old peavey tnt..so i tried the TNT with a G&L tribute SB-2 and he said, wow you're pretty good, which i said, nawww...pretty average actually..lol....but i got offered a job teaching there...they organise 75% of the lessons which is all theory n stuff, and i get the other 25% to teach like technique, help focus on what they want or need or whatever...i should start in a week or two

Although this is a hijacking... sorry ntb... In regards to your post heath it made me think... if nothing else talkbass I believe humbles us to an extent. Which is a good thing. You may be throwing down some amazing stuff but do to your exposure of all these other great bass players, you know that you only touched the tip of the iceberg.

thanks...but personally i think im pretty average...i have my good points and bad points....i think im a better hip hop and blues bassist than anything...being able to play the same 1,2,4 bar or more riff repetively for 10+ minutes...i thank my teacher for drilling me like that...he drilled me with chameleon...

but its wierd for me these days...all of a sudden ive got bands knocking on my doorstep all asking me to do different things...my two main being a jazz trio and heavey funk band...well, those two bands are basically the same linup, just minus the singer for the jazz, our 3rd jazz gig in a row this sunday, and we had to have a replacement drummer last week, one of the guitarists mates and he's a pro drummer of like 20 years and he thinks ive got talent...mind you thats coming from a guy who every 5 minutes was leaning over to me goin "just think of titties heath, just think of titties"....

well yeah...sorry bout the rant

Hey Nick, my G&L ASAT gets an almost identical tone to a 'Ray. Just raise the poles on the 1st coil of the bridge p.u. a bit, set to both pickups, series, and active(or with act. treb. boost). Add that to your G.A.S. list.
