It's not like it was an accident. It was pure negligence, and shows a lot of disrespect for you. I would be upset. That is a USA Fender bass, not a cheap junker.
Back in the mid 1970s, I loaned my 1961 Fender P bass to a friend. It was a nice bass, in nearly new condition. After about a week, I thought I should check on it by going to the place where they practiced. As I approached the location, I saw that the building had burned to the ground the night before. My bass was destroyed. That bass would be worth a lot of money now. I was very angry. All I got from the guy was: "Sorry". The guy died a long time ago, and I can't dwell on it.
In the last two years, I bought two brand new Fender American Deluxe basses. (A P, and a J). I have loaned my MIM J to a trusted, and mature friend, but I will not loan these to anyone. I may change my mind about this eventually, but for now, I would not let anyone who I don't have a lot of trust in even handle them.
