I've owned the same single bass for about 12 years. I've done a lot of insanely stupid stuff to it - putting it in a ceiling fan while fixing the strap comes to mind. It's beat up but still sounds the dance. But the thing is, I did those things. If somebody else did and didn't apologize I'd be really really pissed. If they did apologized, people make mistakes and you can't dwell on it. No apology is true scummery

OK, so this is clearly a thread I'm not destined to make any friends in.

After our gig last night I let my guitarist play my bass with a girl we know who is in another band. It was her party/tailgate at her sisters house. So I was watching the game not really paying attention. This morning I unpack everything and I noticed this burn mark. I'm not mad, honestly it's ok. I am however mad at the lack of care and attention with my gear. So I'm trying to figure out how I feel about this. Would you be pissed?

You mean that little stripe of discoloration between the tuners for the E and A strings? I bet that can be fixed. Try posting something in repairs or luthier's corner and see what comes up. Or take it to a luthier.

Yeah. This is why I don't let people touch my stuff. I'm going to call him tomorrow and tell him what happened and that I'm pissed.

Being honest about your feelings with your friend is good, being confrontational is not. You will simply shut down the dialogue and put him on the defensive. This may sound appealing, but it is not an effective way of communicating. I'd tell him about the damage, tell him you're seeking ways to repair it, and that you would like to be reimbursed. Do this calmly, not yelling and swearing.

A simple way to make it easier for him to smoke cigarettes: smash his teeth.

:rollno:

I'd punch him in the head for being such an idiot.

:rollno::rollno:

I think I'm just going to hear up a quarter with a touch till it's red hot then drop it in his back Jean pocket when he's not paying attention. A burn for a burn. Plus it will be funny to watch him freak out.

:rollno::rollno::rollno: What are you, 12?

Yeah, I don't like cigs to begin with - I'd be pretty pissed, and might consider putting one out in his face if I couldn't get that out... After all, it's not like it's a $200 Squier - that's a nice, fairly expensive bass...

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Is this the kind of generation we've raised? One that gets their little pink panties in a twist over something as innocuous as a cigarette burn on a guitar headstock?? Christ, the was a day back when men were men that you could barely find a guitar that *didn't* have a cig burn there.

That burn mark won't devalue your bass one thin dime. In fact, here in these days of no-smoking-anywhere, it gives off a bit of anachronistic charm. Don't go pissing yourself over something as harmless as this.

Really? What happened to common decency? If I borrow something and don't return it in the same condition I damn well own up to it, apologize and offer to compensate the owner.

It may be a minor mark and an accident, but that's really beside the point as I see it. I wouldn't be very angry about this mark, but I would be quite disappointed in a person who didn't own up to making it.

Just checking out your gear on your profile, and that's some pretty sweet kit you've got there.

Out of interest, being as you wouldn't mind any of your basses suffering a harmless little cigarette burn, what's the upper limit of the damage you'd accept before you flipped?

Not looking for a pissing match, but genuinely curious.

If headstocks are for smokes, why do reggae players play headless basses?

Where was I? Oh yeah. Would he do the same to his own gear? If so, while he's a slob, he's not a bad man. If not, then he's not your friend, and the mistake is yours for thinking he was. Unless, of course, he's saved your family from certain death many times or something like that.

Sorry, but borrowing your equipment to unknown person and not watching over it is bound to end this way. If you are not cool with possible damage, don't do it. Unless you are cool with it, in which case disregard my advice.
And yes, this guy was douchy for not telling you, but he doesn't know you, so why should he care?
P.S. If I damaged someone elses equipment, I would do everything to make it right, but let's be honest - a lot of people just wouldn't care.

Huh?

I remember doing a large outdoor gig, multiple bands etc. etc. The bassist for the first band set up his big rig, I forget what it was then proceeded to line up about six beers on top of the head (I'm sure you see where this is going) They start their sound check and about half way through the song the beers spill all over the place and take out his amp. He walks over to me sheepishly and asks if he can use my rig I tell him sorry but no you can't. I will let you use my DI though. Never loan gear, don't give me this hippy pay it forward ****. I and I presume you work VERY hard to get the gear you have, trust me no one will take care of your gear like you will.......................remember you are dealing with musicians. :rollno:
