So this happened...

Back when I was looking for a band to fit into, I came across a lot of crazy and weird situations.

One was a guitar player and drummer that wanted to jam Metallica tunes. Ok, I’m down with that. Get there and find out they only know and like Black album and forward. Hard pass.

Another was again a guitar player and drummer that were looking for a bassist to complete a trio. Turns out the band was the guitar players revenge against his recently separated wife who still lived in the house. I found this out on the third jam session when she came home from work early and “caught us” in the basement. She started yelling at the guitar player, then the drummer and guitar player both yelled back at her, and I just stood there in awe of what was happening. Turned out they hadn’t really taken any real steps towards separation other than sleeping in different rooms and talking about each other to their tween age kids. The guitar player went and used their savings to buy his gear AND his buddies drum kit. I could not pack my gear and leave fast enough, never went there again.

People got too much drama and mental damage these days to even think about joining a band ever again. I’m happy jamming along to songs I like or just being creative on my own.

I don't think you really need to apologize. "look" on stage DOES matter. if someone was horribly disfigured, no matter how good they are, it would hurt a band's chances would it not? Yes, someone that literally can't move without a cane is not going to help a band on stage. That's life.

It was about 35 years ago. I went to an outdoor function (I won't mention the name of the organization) and I watched the band loading in.

There was a person, missing a left arm, who was looking awfully "familiar" with the equipment (It's tough to describe. ya just knew he owned these pieces).

I thought: "Must be the singer or something."

Nope. Left handed bass guitarist he played everything by hammer-ons and pull offs.

They weren't play RUSH, but I'm glad that guy (survivor of a motorcycle accident) didn't feel "disabled".

I lost two fingertips on my right hand, twenty years ago. Should people like me pack-it-in or is it okay if we try to do what brings joy to our life?

nobody said anyone needs to "pack it in". Just saying that look on stage DOES matter. And some bands reject members based on look -- including disfigurement, age, weight, baldness, whether good looking or not. It just goes with the territory.

by all means, play no matter what. But to pretend that somehow "look" doesn't matter on stage is silly. It does. I've certainly can't get the opportunities i did 20 years ago just based on age alone. I don't cry about it. I find people that don't hold this opinion to play with

You Don’t Know What Love Is RB

Woah. Hell of a list there..

I want to express my most sincere apologies if my comment seemed inappropriate to you, but I did not intend to sound like I was saying anything negative about the guy's disability. That was not at all my intention. It just took me by surprise because I was sort of expecting to have some fun with music for a change. I also have disabilities, but mine are not as obvious.
I think you need to own your discrimination “ if my comment seemed inappropriate” yes it is, you were expecting to have some fun with music, I don’t see how the guy using a cane would change this ?

@IamGroot, what does "RB" mean, next to all those songs? And does "end of discussion" mean you took the gig or you didn't take the gig?

RB = Real Book, meaning whatever key the real book uses, not that you can have a real book on the stand.

End of Discussion......He sends the set list (happens only about half the time), you accept and you meet for the first time at the job. No audution, no rehearsal, no discusssion. Most of these people are nice folks and good to excellent musicians. Gigs with sax players means you need to bone up on sax tunes -alwasy ask for set list with sax players.

I have had only two rock/blues gigs in twenty years that were show up and play.

This is a super easy song when you know it, but the main line isn't intuitive, and I can see how it would mess someone up without any work on it first. It's also really fast so if you're already not quite sure, the changes could pass you by in a hurry!
There's a couple of parts in the song where the guitar lick plays by itself. We did it so the guitar came in with two patterns then the bass then the vocal. On the second one that is the long vamp, the the guitarist and I came in at the same time. Sounded really good when we hit it right, and if he came in first (too soon of course, I couldn't possibly come in late...) I'd just wait and come in later like on the original.

Flexibility is key. We do it like the record but I have had moments when we haven't done it for a while and I forgot exactly which parts I'm supposed to lay out on. The singer just sings it where he's supposed to and it's never a problem, but then I go back and listen to it and realize I played more than I should have :)
