So this happened...

It was like trying to pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time trying to play and sing Message in a bottle for quite a while, yet it's a top 3 feeling when you finally get it sounding halfway convincing!
Oh, yeah, that would be a challenge! I do backing vocals on it but I've never tried to sing all the leads too.
It’s been said you don’t get it unless it makes you laugh - but you don’t realize the full implications till it makes you cry.
I simplified it a little, and we added a little hint of ska punk feel. Cool gaps were created. Trust me, it sounds better than it seems on paper
Then don't take the audition or get them to agree to something less.
Note for note" is a LOT of work. I just say I know the song and I will get pretty close but Im not auditioning for a tribute band. If they object, I say Hasta La Vista, Pizza.
It was never clear to me that they expressed the desire for N4N playing to the OP ahead of time.
I have a whole thread about this elsewhere. You are correct that it's a lot of work and almost always a waste of time, if N4N is truly what's being learned, because bands usually don't play N4N themselves, even if they say they do. I've learned the hard way not to waste my time on this.
But I also think that what most people mean when that say note for note is not actually note for note.
MANY guitar players (in my experience) have serious ego/control issues.
I've never walked away from the potential for a good paying gig, but I have walked away from toxic situations no matter how good the money is.
Weekend warrior cover bands? Forget it! If I'm not having fun, I leave a Michael-shaped hole in the wall during (or right after) the audition.
I've told the story before: I was begged into an audition. The band played 25 songs I didn't know (a few I'd never even heard). I was contacted the afternoon they wanted me to audition. So, three hours' notice.
The second guitar player showed up late, couldn't hear his guitar was out of tune, and got snotty with me for no reason ...
Me: "Sorry, guys. I've never even heard this song."
Him: "It's G to D. Can you handle that?"
Me (packing up my gear): "I'll go home and practice and let you know. Wait by your phone."

It sounds like you were real clear that you couldn’t cut the gig and wouldn’t be a good fit and they didn’t believe you,
I use to really hate nailing down ten or twelve songs only to find out at the next practice the guitar player was using a capo on half of them.

Yeah, I told the drummer the day before that I hadn't been playing bass regularly in nearly 20 years. I told them both again as soon as I arrived that I had been playing mostly acoustic guitar and learning piano for the last 10 years. Just for "fun" I was running scales up and down the neck while I was trying to get a decent sound from the amp and speaker combination that the drummer supplied. Finding like minded professionals to jam with seems to be getting harder and harder these days, or maybe its just me.
I want to express my most sincere apologies if my comment seemed inappropriate to you, but I did not intend to sound like I was saying anything negative about the guy's disability. That was not at all my intention. It just took me by surprise because I was sort of expecting to have some fun with music for a change. I also have disabilities, but mine are not as obvious.
I'm sorry everyone... Please read post number 44. It is on page 3. I am really sort of in shock at the moment, and I need some time to process what i just found out.
Thank you all for the stories. I am in a band where 63 songs were thrown at me over a three month period. I have a bit more free time perhaps than the average person, and spent a lot of time listening and playing through these songs. However, I just can't seem to memorize all the changes in all of them. As I have zero input to song selection, as well as other toxic behaviors from the BL (and his wife), it is time to go. Thanks for the similar stories and thus encouragement.
I don't think you really need to apologize. "look" on stage DOES matter. if someone was horribly disfigured, no matter how good they are, it would hurt a band's chances would it not? Yes, someone that literally can't move without a cane is not going to help a band on stage. That's life. Age (older) hurts your chances with bands too. As does obesity. ugliness. no ability to move whatsoever (boring on stage), Or or or... what you do and how you present yourself on stage DO matter to most kinds of music. a really hot girl lead singer helps a band far more than an ugly one. No denying it.
it's just reality. I wouldn't want to be in a band with someone whose disability would be a negative distraction to the band on stage. It's just a fact. I have gone to try-outs and the look of the band definitely made me turn them down --- too old, too fat, too ugly, whatever. I knew they would never be much and I didn't want to waste my time, not out of arrogance but out of practicality.
That sounds like an “ old guys” band that I tried to help out before I just gave up before burning bridges.
Just…”really?” Do you guys have any idea? I tried to be civil, but they were such idiots about jamming on song lists from unpopular, non-commercial bands from 3-5 decades ago with no idea how to rehearse, balance, listen, etc…. just 3 old “bedroom “ guitar stars with delusions of competence.
Yep, never gonna get out of the garage and don’t want any help from anybody. Look up “ Dunning- Krueger” effect.
When someone is really ignorant, then how do they get smart enough to realize how ignorant they are? Sorta like FaceBook.
