Before my joke, is technically a thread that shouldn't have even been started. All I'm saying is there are comments here on half the threads in TBOT that "denigrate" someone or something and TBOT wouldn't even exist if every comment made was 100% taken to heart. ;)
Meh, rationalization. Before your post, there was zero partisan sentiment expressed, and most posts afterward have smartly avoided that, too. You've been here long enough to know that you can denigrate most things as long as you avoid religion and politics.

Why do we have this belief/tradition of giving people a 2nd term? I mean...what does it REALLY mean now? In past presidencies it was in support of a candidate, to sort of guess that because a good job is being done that that candidate should stay....but now it's like we rely on it, because we have to make it "fit" the "agenda", whatever it may be.

I dont think it has to do with an agenda of any sort. We've minimized how many terms a President can serve fairly recently. 22nd Amendment passed in 1947 limits a POTUS to 2 terms. FDR served 4 terms, I believe... people liked him. The last 2 Presidents, prior to our current POTUS served two terms, but the Pres before them only served one.

Personally I think it's time that the whole concept of re-elections/2nd terms was hung out to dry...in these times, it should be a different candidate every four years. But just off the top of my head we've already had two presidents in a row serving 2 terms each, .....and now we wake up to the fact that there are problems with the country?

I dont see why if a POTUS does a good job in office they shouldnt be allowed to serve a second term, if thats what the people want.

Does anyone think there could be a better use for the millions of dollars that are spent on campaigning. I'm starting to believe in federally funded campaign money, and then limiting them greatly.

Well...hate to break the news.....George doesn't care, he's underground.

If it's tunnel vision/dwelling in past tradition...anyone could figure out that's a pretty weak habit to adopt.

So whats your reasoning for why a President should not be allowed to serve a second term? I havent really seen you make that point other than saying it fits some sort of agenda? Who's agenda?

You asked the question why it's that way and I gave you the answer. Don't try to turn it around on me.

And actually, George DID care. He told us to not fall into a bi-partisan system as it would end up destroying our country by dividing us. Given the current state of things, I'd say he was right.

Well, then do some research and see where the money goes, then vote for a candidate who's NOT on that gravy train. If enough of us did, it would rock their world.

You misunderstood my post. I'm saying the powers that be will have their man in office, regardless if the American people voted him in or not. They've taken many of our rights away to further their agenda, so why not our right to vote.

NOTE: just something I suspect since I have no actual proof.

Look, all I want out of a POTUS is for him to do what he said he's going to do. This past four years......I don't see "change" being the positive use of the word.

Does it not matter at all what it is he said he'd do (or is going to do) or are you just looking for accuracy? I think you need to study up a bit. You seem very opinionated but don't seem to understand why we would allow two terms for president. pretty basic stuff there. Might effect your opinions if you had the knowledge of how our government works and why it works that way to actually asses them.

People looking for simple answers like "term limits" generally don't understand the problems. If the answer fits nicely on a bumper sticker it's probably not very good.

maybe so. But I can see when a plan isn't working. I had suspicions within the first year that things would never pan out. Call me crazy but that was my foresight.

Dont go there, thats not what your post was about. You stated being against a President serving two terms, not our current President. Lets say that our hypothetical POTUS did withhold all of his promises and everything our country was thriving more than ever before (again, hypothetically). Would you not want that President to be allowed to serve another 4 years?

So your issue is with our current Pres serving two terms, and not an ideal President. Thats why you have the option of voting for someone else.

hypothetically is out of the question.....how can you undo over 20 years of climaxing problems? You can't just go for scrapping a whole system and expect that congress is going to follow you blindly. Congress is there to make sure a level of realism is maintained.

hypothetically, we would still be electing FDR!

the main problem with the whole concept of presidency is someone envisions a different plan for America; everyone's ideas are different. Some good, some bad, but overall, different.

If our leaders actually created a system where each presidency had to chain itself to continue the work of what was done previously, then maybe there'd be success. But we're a major world power, throwing our status to the wind!

Maybe so.

You didnt answer the question. Why do you feel a President should not be allowed to serve two terms? Im trying to gain an understanding of your position here.
