So, we're a Classic Rock band....

Actually I didn't mind Europa since I thought it had a pretty cool bass line, and the ending jam was a place to flex some bass muscle, but it gets almost no reaction from the audiences we've done it for so far. In fact the 2nd time we played it live at the 4th of July party the lead guitarist screwed up and played the 3rd pattern licks during the second pattern and it all train wrecked at that point. We recovered during the jam, but total turd sandwich. Plus we play it too fast but that's the guitarists fault. The drummer tends to set the tempo fast. I nipped that in the bud early by expressing my desire to count off my songs.

We haven't done Europa since, but we've worked on it again during rehearsals after the forth. I think we first played that in rehearsals about 3 weeks after I joined the band last year. He blames it's demise on the drummer, who did tell me he hates the Santana crap. The King does not like Europa. More importantly, MILFs with 3 glasses of win in them don't like Europa :thumbsup:

I think the guy is on his way out unfortunately. Keyboardist knows I'm on the same page as the band and what we want to do. Apparently this isn't the first time he's acted like this. Which is a bummer because despite it all, he plays great guitar and provides great vocal harmony, but I'm glad it's not about me.

Yeah, my last band played Europa for a while. Then it mercifully died. We also did "Hold On," which rocks.

If a band only wants to play songs they like stay in the basement and all will be fine.
Playing in a working band means having a product you can sell to people who want it.
The band I play in is a classic rock cover band. In all the years I've played my only rules were and still are is
1can we make it sound good
2 will it sell.
I have played many songs I don't care for Oh Donna comes to mind but it is a wedding favorite.
The rule is when you step on stage and the lights come on you better have a smile on your face cause the people paying are there to have a good time not be brought down by the band.
I say this with 50+ years of being a weekend warrior and still going strong.

I asked about Steely Dan stuff, which also would be pushing our limits if it's the latter day stuff. But he didn't respond. This is about him wanting to take the band in a jazz direction even it's beyond our capabilities or if it' to the detriment of the band, because it's the right thing to do. I've been working on Steve Harris/Iron Maiden stuff in my spare time working on the gallop, but I wouldn't suggest doing Run To The Hills because it' would expand our pallets as musicians. I may crank the car stereo when it's in the car and head bang, but I have no illusions that Run To The Hills would be a favorite of the dancing MILFs.

Now he doesn't want to rehears and says he won't put much time now into the material because we won't play jhis jazz stuff. But this is new ground for me. I've mostly just jammed with friends and like minded people. Never been in a real working band where a firing or hiring may happen. Puts a whole new spin and understanding on the FIRE HIM threads :laugh:

Unfortunately, your guitarist is pouting. If he is not going to rehearse, he can't be in the band.

You know what you have to do.

BTW, IMHO, this is really cool. I would pick up a side band in a heartbeat like this. It is what it is and great old songs (while most of us musicians hate them because of being over played) are a blast to play when the audience is just having a good time...

I don't see how Room 335 can be considered "rock" at all. It's more easy listening music....if it had a vocal, it would have been covered by Jerry Vale. (And for those of us old enough to remember Jerry Vale, that would be the kiss of death.) Totally inappropriate for a classic rock band.

If you want to play an instrumental that's classic, try SRV's Riviera Paradise. THAT would fit into a classic rock and blues set.
