So what does a $25k bass actually get you?

Awesome story Mr. Dope !! I do own an Alembic. I had to go through a bunch of them over the years to finally land on the one I now own and will NEVER sell. That being said, my PEAVEY Cirrus(s) sound and play better than anything else, too.

what does $25 k get you? Perhaps the tuners from the Ritter 'Floral Autumn' 250 thousand dollar bass? (Yes, a quarter of a million dollars for a bass!) It has gold hardware studded with diamonds, ancient mammoth tusk nut, insane levels of inlay and pretty much over the top everything.... Makes the $25 k job sound like chicken feed. ;)

so is that the asking price or did it sell for that???

I guess for this money, you are buying a dream. If you have been chasing that dream for years, maybe you will be gifted with a rare experience of finally achieving that dream, and - with luck - you will bask in the joy of acquiring something truly beautiful which speaks to your soul. Or (and this has been my experience) you find that the object of your obsession is not enough to fill the hole you have created for it, and it will leave the bitter taste of wet ashes in your mouth.

I sincerely hope that most of our friends who have purchased boutique basses truly love and delight in them every time they think of them.

$25K? I will never know from personal experience. Generally shop for used in the under $1K range. Paid $2K for an especially nice, long-out-of-production one (worth it to me) but don't plan to spend even that much ever again.
