So why fanned frets?

FYI - simple way to kinda try it to see for yourself - a 34" scale bass tuned up a half step (C F A# D# G#) has the same string tension as a 36" scale bass tuned standard. A full step sharp on a 34" bass is close to 38" scale standard tuning tension.

Obviously, you don't get the balanced tension of multi-scale/fanned frets on the higher strings, but you can get a good idea of the effects on the B and E strings.
 
I am still not convinced and think the low B quality on a Dingwall *MIGHT* simply be caused by just the pickup placement.

This is the bass I have, and the 34" low B on it is just as clear, growly and sustainy as any of the other strings.
I really honestly still think it is simply a case of design and build quality along with clever pickup placement.


Same player, different amps, but still a useful comparison:

To me, the G sounds a bit thicker and warmer on the Dingwall, and the B sounds a little clearer. Subtle difference, but I prefer Andy's tone from the NG2 than from any of the Warwick videos I've heard him do. To me, the pickup placement on a lot of warwicks (closer to the bridge than a standard fender) improves the B string but weakens the G string. And I still think the 37" B edges out any competition at shorter scales.

This is my Dingwall Z3 5 string..It's not just about the 37" B string. The E string is 36.25" and the A string is 35.5". Getting lost in the mix is a thing of the past...

I played an Ibanez 6 string fan fret a couple months ago and now I'm gassing for one. This is the one I've got my eye on: Link Removed
Earlier this year I was hoping that Rondo would release a batch of Defiant 63437 fan frets.
But they're still discontinued.

I jumped into the FF game about a month ago. I found a good deal on an Ibanez SRFF806.
It did not take me that long to get used to the fretting, maybe a minute or two. The tension, clarity, etc. were noticeable right away, and for the better. Low B is very clear al the way up the neck (in spite of needing some instrument adjustments).
I would argue that the ergonomics are not all they are cracked up to be. I have several passages I play where I need to quickly stretch Db (A string) to low F. Because of the fret slant I feel I am reaching back farther than I used to on the parallel fret bass I was playing before. It’s minimal but I do feel the extra tension in my hand making that quick stretch.

For what its worth, I didn't find the Ibanez to be ergonomical at all. It seems like they just threw some parts together without paying enough attention to the details. Dingwalls seem much more comfortable to me, despite having a longer scale length. Granted, I have large hands, so that may play into it as well.

Good to know it’s not just me. I have pretty large hands, too. I’ll hang onto the Ibby but will try and get my hands on a Dingwall someday.

If pickup placement was the sole solution for guaranteeing a great B string, every manufacturer would simply slam a bridge pickup a half-inch before the witness points on the bridge and call it a day. They don’t. Physics and design can’t be ignored, as a Dingwall B sounds better, and more in tune than everything else acoustically, with no amp. Specs, supposition, and stuff you read online are no substitute for in-hand on on-the-job experience with a Dingwall.

After playing multi-scale (Dingwall) instruments for years and loving their clarity, it finally occurred to me that by optimizing the tension of each string, the harmonic content is changed for the better which improves note definition. I play by ear, and it's easier to hear what I'm playing, and yes, I would agree that it follows that it is easier for the listener to hear what I am playing (on one of my Dingwalls) over any mono-scale instrument. I have three tuned E-G and am not all about the B. ;)

I don't ever play my electrics acoustically. Still seeing not a single reason why fanned frets are needed for tight low B's.
The marketing bug does not affect me.


Same tension, thinner string.

If you like thicker strings to achieve the desired tension then more power to you. I like thinner strings.

I find thicker strings end up losing clarity despite the increased tension.

I mean, I really dislike Fender basses but I can totally understand why other people like them.
 
1) Your criteria regarding recorded bass lines also goes against most anything outside of a Fender Precision or Jazz. Popularity is not a measure of quality; please refer to McDonald's, Walmart, and Justin Bieber for clarity on this concept ;).
The comment was, "think of all bass lines PLAYED or recorded since 1955", or you could say all bass lines played or recorded in the past 62-63 years. McDonalds & Wal-Mart are examples of the pinacle of quality for achieving the purpose of their existence. Popularity is an excellent measure of quality when it comes to music, otherwise it's just a matter of taste that varies greatly. Not too sure about the Bieber example.....

2)As far as string tension inconsistency, it is the omega (not the alpha). The alternative to equalizing tension is increasing the string gauge, and by the time you get equal tension all the way across a 34" 5 string you've got a B string that feels and behaves more like a rod than a string. You can get a B string with better tension at gauges lower than that, which will feel more consistent with the other strings, but it will be lower tension and feel a bit looser. Usable? Sure, maybe, that's a matter of opinion.
No arguement here. I'd actually prefer lighter tension on all strings of my 5 string basses, but I've played flats on them the past couple years. Love the tone.

2a) String tension is actual physics; you can mathematically calculate the tension of a string that is a specific gauge, tuned to a specific pitch, at a specific scale length. Please don't argue that your 34" .130 gauge B string is just as tight as a 37". It isn't. Really, it isn't. It may sound fine - a stiff neck goes a long way here, as does good solid hardware, electronics, and a good setup.
I didn't make any mention of 34", .130 gauge,or 37". I do agree on the physics aspect. I did some aerial fiber optic plant construction years ago and tension required to achieve proper sag is directly proportional to the diameter of the carrier strand, but unlike bass strings, you have to pay attention to the temperature when you "tune it" up to the correct sag height.

2b)If you still want to argue the string tension thing, please go argue with the folks that have been making things like pianos and harps for the last few centuries. Multi-scale stringed instruments aren't anything new, it's just something that was only applied to guitars and basses in the last 20-30 years.
Never wanted to argue string tension at all. My general point was whether multi-scale length was the optimum way to equalize string tension on bass guitars. But while we are discussing instruments with different scale lengths, next time you have the opportunity, press the lower pitch strings of a piano or harp against its frets.....

3)If scale length doesn't really make that much of a difference, why aren't we all just playing down-tuned Strats and Les Pauls?
I think this specific question would deal more with string gauge than scale length. Short scales are enjoying quite a popularity surge these days, along with multiple micro-scale basses of 21" & 23" scale length.

Sure, there's always a few people who chime in with "all my 34" B strings are perfect!!". And there's also always people who chime in that they've never encountered a dead spot around 5th fret on the G string of a Fender bass, and everyone else's hearing is defective.
Definitely not me. I don't have anything close to perfect, except maybe my wife (well, at least she's much closer than me), and I don't think I've ever played a 34" scale Fender bass that didn't have a noticeable dead spot.

Qualification for all this "in my opinion" stuff - I've got 3 35" Modulus basses, a custom built 36", and a Dingwall AB1. Dingwall's got the most equal tension of them, and the clearest, most consistent B all the way up and down the neck, and it feels exactly like all the other strings. Not even a tiny bit less tight, and totally focused. But the others are very, very good, certainly usable, and have their own strengths. None are for sale ;).
Great for you, but I've gotta sell something before I can try out a multi-scale length bass. May have to sell two or three somethings.....

The next big thing in equalizing string tension will likely be electronic. Then, string tension AND diameter can be identical across any string count instrument. Electronics will interpret the vibrations & output any selected pitch. Actually already available in guitar-like instruments / effects that can easily put out bass frequencies at the flip of a switch (or touch of a screen). In fact, the tuned down Strat or Les Paul can be a reality now without having to tune down, or tune at all.
