Solid Gold FX Beta drive? Anyone playing one?

Got mine today! Proaudiostar $143 shipped. Does exactly what I want. Warm as all hell. Low gain gets the growl when you dig in, higher gain is a nice creamy, saturated OD that can get pretty gnarly but all extremely musical. Easily can be an always on pedal. Holds the low end beautifully, no need for a blend knob. Again, this is exactly what I need. I dont think itll do for super aggressive modern tone, but wouldnt be surprised if, with the right set up, you could make it work. To me this is a more vintage voiced pedal. Solid Gold indeed.

Given that it's vintage voiced, I imagine it doesn't compare much to the B3k. It also seems fairly different from the VMT, but I'll know for sure in a few days...

What exactly are people talking about when calling something 'vintage voiced' ?
Also; a question for those 'in the know'...
If you had to chose between these for 'dirt'
-beta
-Barbershop
-B3k
-Accountant

Which would you get and why?

Thanks!

Vintage voiced to me is an EQ thing that has rolled off highs and warm lows. Some that go for the vintage amp thing may have the organic mid thing, too (like the VMT), plus a touch responsiveness.

For the drive choices there, depends on one's goals. The Barbershop is if you want the sweet harmonic boost and "pushed tube" overdrive sound but don't need a fuzzy distortion. The B3k is if you want something aggressive with focus on high mids, with more grind than fat bottom. I'm guessing the Beta will be sort of toward the Barbershop in that it's vintage and tube-ish, but not farty on high gain, just sweet distortion...which is why I'm going to try it, will have to see. I already have the subtle tube and the aggressive drive stuff covered. [del]The Accountant is a compressor.[/del] The Accountant is one I don't know enough about to offer an opinion. :)

The Accountant is also one of my favorite overdrives. ;) It's very dirty, for a comp.

I agree that generally when people say "vintage" they mean less highs, more low mids, and more of a smooth warm fat quality as opposed to the more cutting, grinding, articulate sound that people call "modern".

I kind of dig the warmth that the Accountant adds which is why I am planning on keeping it on my board even after I add another compressor.

On a related note, Bongo, how would you rate the warmth feature of the FEA Labs DE-CL as this kind of "OD", or am I out to lunch on the comparison?

Actually quite different. The Accountant goes from clean to gritty to slightly grindy, whereas the DE CL goes from clean to clean-warm to warmer to thicker-more-warm-with-fur to a sort of odd squelching quicksand. I recommend the Accountant for more of a bright toothy sound and the DE CL for more of a smooth thick sound (when running either of them in their driven non-clean range).

Ok, just received my Beta, looks like CanadaPost decided to surprise me with some quick success. It is definitely nice. Pretty sure it will bump the pork loin off my board.

Too bad it does not have top jacks, that thing would have been an even better package.
