Songs on Bass That Chicks Like

Don't do it. If you must do it, don't let dudes catch you doing it. Unless you want to get kicked squah in the nyuts.

Against my better judgement, here are a few ideas derived from my younger, more hormone-driven days:

"What is and what should never be" works. Especially if you can whistle the guitar solo while you play the bass line...

Another trick is to basically play guitar on the bass. Try "3 Libras" by APC (Change the key). It's pretty easy, and women go berserk for that one. "Wonderful Tonight" will also work in this style. Definitely don't let dudes catch you doing this one.

Also, experiment with harmonics as melody, accompanying yourself on fretted notes. (Think Victor Wooten's Amazing Grace) "Shenandoah" works in this style.

Seriously, though, don't do it.

Dude, it's not that hard to learn a few Coldplay songs on guitar. Trying to impress the average girl with Bass is going to be rough... unless you're reaaaallly good... not a lot of chicks you meet are really going to know anything about the instrument or what it's function is in a band.

Women go for that acoustic singer songwriter stuff...rhythm guitar and serenade kinda stuff...They are awed by a simple 3 chord song as long as you can sing it...not by bass virtuoso-ism. Frankly I don't think most women appreciate instrumental music the same way men do, especially not the same way musicians do, what you find impressive she will find dull...I don't think its a big coincidence that non-vocal roles in music are male dominated.

*disclaimer: Clearly there are good/excellent female bassists, Carol Kay, that chick from the talking heads, Paz...I'm just talking about what the general lay(non-musician) population.

I was at a party with an acoustic guitar *** hole who tried to pass off Liam Lynch comedy acoustic stuff off as his own just to get laid...made me want to put his head through the guitar...I called him out on it like 5 times (I was drunk) "You didn't write that! You saw it on comedy central!"...I think the girl still slept with him.

Find songs that are recognizable from the bass part alone. That's the key. Although if you can sing that helps a lot. Problem with bass is that girls like "pretty" songs. There aren't really too many "pretty" bass lines I know of. Grab a guitar and finger pick a few sustained chords and the girls will come a flocking. It sucks, but it's true.

I lived in a frat house and had 3 basses, a guitar, and a mandolin hanging on the wall. Aside from the girls wondering what that shrunken guitar was doing on my wall, they almost always said, "hey, you play guitar?" I never heard a girl say, "wow, sweet acoustic fretless bass!"

If she is already digging you it won`t really matter what you play...k,maybe pass on the GWAR. She`ll be all excited that you play an instrument and focus on the inensity and passion you bring to you playing. :)

Way back when the women liked these songs I played:
"Fields of Gold" - Sting
"To the Moon and Back" - Savage Garden
"Truly,Madly,Deeply" - Savage Garden
"Wonderful" - "Santa Monica" - "I Will Buy You a New Life" - all by Everclear
"Cumbersome" - Seven Mary Three
"Wonderful" - Adam Ant
"Wherever You Will Go" - The Calling
"Name" - Goo Goo Dolls
"Material Girl" - Madonna
"I`m Only Happy When it Rains" - Garbage
"Linger" - Cranberries
"Learn to Fly" - Foo Fighters
"Pretty Fly for a White Guy" - Offspring
"Get a Job" - Offspring
"Burnin` For You" - Blue Oyster Cult
"Drive" - Incubus
"Duck and Run" - 3 Doors Down
"Glycerine" - Bush
"Letting the Cables Sleep" - Bush
"Gigantic" - Pixies
"Ballad of Chasey Lain" - Bloodhound Gang
JUST KIDDING ON THAT LAST ONE!!!

"Blurry" - Puddle of Mudd
"Other Side" - RHCP
"Build Me Up(Buttercup)" - Foundations
"Long Cool Woman" - Hollies
....probably gobs more of the modern stuff as well.
Hope some of these set the mood for you, young Cavalier!

You spent too much of your energy being pissed off & not enough of your energy being an acoustic guitar guy yourself.
