I TOTALLY agree with the above quotes!
The "hard pan" makes zero sense. In what musical situation would you be hearing anything in just one ear? It's really bad when you hear this in headphones. It's VERY distracting.
It's one thing to pan a rhythm guitar a little to one side, a clav a little to the other side, one harmony vocal a little to one side, another harmony vocal a little to the other side, etc., to create some sonic space. But having anything, especially main stuff like lead vocals or bass, completely on one side or the other...WHY?!
Of course, if you double-track a part, you can hard pan, but you're still hearing the part on both the left and right sides, as opposed to just one side.
