I wonder how many of the people refusing to play a bunch of songs are the same ones complaining in other threads about not getting paying gigs?

Songs you refuse to learn...

I'm not against playing Mony Mony or Mustang Sally. If people are dancing and having fun, who am I to judge? I have varied tastes. I like rock, blues, country, reggae, tex mex, folk, bluegrass, soul.....but I'm not gonna play rap or disco. Ain't gonna happen. Whole lotta nope there.
I'm in the lucky situation that our setlist is mostly all fun stuff we like playing. About the time I'm getting sick of a song, someone else is ready to cut it out also. I'm also smart enough to realize I was wrong about a couple of interesting songs that I felt were weak. They turned out to be crowd pleasers, and I like it when people enjoy the music.
And when it comes to tired old covers, I get some extra gas in my tank when our regulars stay to dance and sing at the end of the third set.

Have you ever listened to the real bass line? It's more interesting in the ballad part - he's not just pounding roots.
I did refuse , years ago, to learn "One Way or Another" in a mostly original band set. I just hated the song, still find it annoying in fact.
My friend, the BL, equally obstinate , kept it in the set list, and I would just stand there refusing to play. What an immature thing to do. At least I was on guitar then, so it didn't fundamentally mess up the song missing a lead guitar.
In retrospect, I should have used metal distortion, and chugged the hell out of that song, I think that would have worked well. Thrown in a few tasteful wailing guitar licks and called it a day. I also wore cargo shorts , then. Coincidence? I think not.

That was the first set opener in my last band. I didnt mind it. Bass line was challenging to an extent. Hated a lot of other stuff on our playlist-as discussed elsewhere on this site.
I recently left/was dropped from that band. I hated to not be playing, but I just had my fill of the direction/attitude/etc..
Had a super PA, great place to practice, classy people, transportation. All the basic necessities. But it wasnt fun. Had just become another obligation. I have another post about that on here somewhere.
Im due for a break anyhow.
But just to show how bad it was, they have a FB page with a featured cover of "American Girl" by my Number One Aint Gonna Play No" Im glad Im out.
Currently waiting for Karma to bring my next band.

Yeah I hear what you're saying about "just another obligation". While I don't think "fun" itself is a good pursuit, because it's not satisfying or motivating, and obligation is necessary - in my explorations of music and motivation in general I am finding that yes, we do need obligations, but they need to be in something you find meaning in. Fun happens along the way, when it happens, but its not about fun.
So if you're not finding sufficient meaning in that music, or in the cover-band production of it, it becomes "just another" obligation.
Yes, the hang never changed as a result. We actually never discussed it again. This was actually 20 years ago!

I veto Beatles songs but even then I had to relent and learn I got a Feeling and one other one that I've thankfully forgotten
