I made and shared some BMS patches on the C4 which replicate the voices used and the filter type. Obviously the way one programs the filter sweep is somewhat different but it covers much of the same ground.

Well, neither my phone nor my ipad will run my C4 via the midipad app now. I did the firmware update a couple of weeks ago on the C4 and since then, zero communication. They're both on midi channel 1 , my iphone "sees" the C4, but I now get a "device not recognized" message on the ipad. I decided to try the Neuro app again, but it wants an older version of my ipads ios. To say I'm a bit frustrated would be an understatement.

I've had communication issues in the past with the C4, and also had it stop passing effected sound. SA was kind enough to fix it for me free of charge, but it's sure starting to look like I just can't rely on the pedal in a live situation. That's a shame because I do love what it can do when it actually works. As of now, I can only control the C4 via my laptop, and that's not a good option for me on live gigs. And to add insult to injury, I can't sign in on the Neuro desktop now. When it rains it pours I guess.

Be sure to reach out to [email protected]. the recent update that gave the C4 bi directional communication with the phone was a big one and it might have broken something. Updates are always a bit risky and impossible for us to test completely, but we thought the enhanced phone experience was worth it.

Well,...success of sorts. Had to set up a new account since I couldn't get back in my original one. Updated my ipad and the Neuro app, then added my patches to a new library. I can access them now through Neuro app, but still nothing if I try to use Midipad Pro, USB is definitely not working for midi messages. Trying it out tonight on the job, so far, the Neuro app seems to be working. Crossing my fingers and knocking on wood.

I'm confused about which expression pedals will work with the C4.

The Source Audio Dual Expression Pedal [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] says that their expression pedal "is compatible with the very common Boss/Roland style (“tip hot”) expression input". To me that implies that if the Source Audio expression pedal works with the C4 then a standard Boss expression pedal like the FV-500L should work too - but it doesn't.

I found the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]y about expression pedals in the Source Audio website and it says actually the tip and ring connections need to be reversed for most expression pedals to work with the One series - why? If they know most expression pedals work one way, why on earth build their pedals to work the opposite way? And rather confusingly the included photograph shows that reversal being done even for the Source Audio expression pedal.

So to get my Boss expression pedal to work with the C4 I will need a cable that reverses the tip and ring, is that right?

There are loads of expression TRS formats and there are no common standards. I bought a boss clone expression pedal and I had to get my soldering iron out to make it work with my Boss ES-5. So it’s a common problem, even with Boss. They don’t always follow their own standards. If you buy a Source Audio Dual Expression pedal, it does “work out of the box” for Source Audio devices. You can also configure it’s 1/4” TRS socket to use with other brands too.
With a TRS jack, with 3 live parts, there are 9 possible combinations of wiring.

The C4 will work with the propriatary 1/8” TRRS connection on the dual expression, the copy in the manual is referring to the 1/4” connections, not the TRRS for 1/8” control input.

If you happen to have a 1/8" TRS to RCA, the polarity can be tested with an RCA to 1/4" TRS adapter. I did this with a Dunlop DVP4 and it's a kludge but it works

Oddly, Roland has a different wiring for their keyboard / synth expression pedals than they do for their guitar expression pedals.
I went through some of this pain with my first expression pedal and needed a soldering iron to get the wiring right (not a Source Audio problem, just a boss ES-5 problem). I decided for my 2nd expression pedal I would keep it really simple and buy a Source Audio dual expression pedal. This is directly connected using SA's 1/8th TRRS topology into my EQ2 and it works really well.

Hey all. Question about using the C4. Obviously some patches have huge volume swings, and are super sensitive to how you play. Was wondering if others use compression with this pedal to tame it? Or is it that I just need to get better at muting to prevent the large volume swings I sometimes get.

Once I decide to keep a sound then I will make adjustments for my playing style and to keep unity gain, I do not rely on a compressor to do those things for me.

I always adjust input/output gain for any patches I download.

I like to use a limiter after effects like the C4 and other filters. Sometimes I want the crazy swells, but want to keep the crazy and energy without the “OMG why so loud???” For the sound man and audience.
