Source Audio EQ2

I expect it uses a filter to focus the tuner's sensitivity to a certain range.

Twenty references to the word "tuner" in the manual. This paragraph on the tuner and I still don't know what 'high/low' bass tuner setting is 'technically' for/does. I wouldn't think it was for active/passive level input as you adjust your main levels elsewhere in the pedal, plus, the guitar setting only has one choice.

Well, I got 'tuner' straight from the SourceAudio EQ GUI. It is the 'Tuner Instrument Range' drop-down box. I still don't know what Bass High and Bass Low mean here with respect to the 'tuner' function for a bass guitar. The guitar choice is easily understood.

Ah, I see. I imagine this tuner screen shot is a separate section of the pedal dedicated to tuning the bass (440Hz= concert A natural). The next section refers to the range the tuner is focusing on so if you're on regular bass or five string I would set it to "Bass Low". I imaging if you have a five string tuned E to C "Bass high" would be appropriate. There is no reference to filtering on this screenshot so I assume that is somewhere else.

No doubt, it is badly worded and poorly communicated. Are we to believe that a 6-string bass uses the "Bass High" setting, while the BEAD-lover opt for the "Bass Low" setting? Kind of meaningless. Luckily, though, you can just pick one and if it tunes the bass, then problem solved.

You might be on to something..lol.. I just don't use the tuner in this pedal yet. I'm sure someone will let us know here soon what all this boils down to.
 
Got mine today. I have to say, I'm really impressed with this thing, though it's my 3rd Source Audio pedal so I expect it to be clever and to sound great and the EQ2 doesn't disappoint. The midrange bands on my amp have really wide Qs and this pedal lets me dial in tones my amp can't pull off; it lets me cut frequencies without over-scooping and losing audibility and articulation. It's perfectly usable from the pedal itself, but the Neuro connection makes it really fast for someone used to EQ plug-ins. The only problem is that I have no room on my board... nothing to kick off. It's all worthy. Aargh!

Your gonna love that pedal. Its so easy to get carried away with, what turns into, surgically operating on your target frequency and finding cancer in all the internal organs surrounding it. Then you wind up like me, save the preset, start over, see if you can do better, and repeat. Then your stuck A/B'ing 15 presets. Technically A/O'ing I guess, O is the 15th letter), it'll drive you nuts. Then go back to the drawing board and tell yourself, "I'm not gonna get that involved this time around", and repeat. Vicious circle. I wound up just starting freshly flat and doing very minimal destruction to the frequency's. Worked out much better that way. I got 2 presets, one for the Dingwall 4 string and one for the Jackson 4 string that I dedicated to be only ever B-E-A-D tuning. Come on, show us the pedal board! I'm sure I can probably find some envelope filter or distortion (can't stand either) there and suggest you just get rid of those and then you will have a spare space for something else to buy..and make room for a BIG FAT compressor! LOL!!

Big fat compressor(s) is already handled in spades.

Besides, I feel like it's pretty efficient use of space. My C4 isn't going anywhere, AND provides a nice envelope filter when I want it. I have two distortions on the board, but (A) I use a mild bit of distortion at times, and (B) The other distortion I use mostly on its lowest setting (nearly clean) to provide some harmonics and very-edge-of-breakup that is part of my clean sound.

Wow, you certainly do have your compression handled. I had to look up that tube and transistor box model, I never heard of it. That's some serious firepower. I have the MXR M87 comp now and I wanted to get a new comp that had the blend knob function on it. I want some of my low end back. I was gonna get the Cali76 but didn't really want to spend that much so, against my own will, I bought the 'Wampler Ego v2" one. I didn't get it yet, is in the mail. It was the name, 'Wampler', that for some reason, my mind equated to 'silly name, junk pedal', but there are a ton of good reviews written about it, so I put all non-sense thinking aside and bought it. This is the same pedal guy that sells a distortion pedal that has a silly 'HAIR' knob on it to bring you back to the days of Poison and Warrant I guess. Should have named it 'SPRAY' instead. Wamplers comp is half the price of the Cali76. I will find out how she does when I get her.

Not to derail this thread any further, but Wampler are no joke. They make great, high quality stuff. Now on to more EQ2 content: I bit the bullet and am expanding the board to accommodate the EQ2 (the bastard) and cause I kinda needed to anyway; it's crowded and needs another 6 inches from side to side to breathe.

EQ2 does a great job at doing what my old Trace Elliot did in the 90s, letting you make a more specific contour, plus all the parametric stuff added which makes it more valuable. Source Audio have taken a mundane, functional item and made it kind of indispensable. Great pedal.

I did pull the trigger on the EQ tube, and it is very impressive. I have primarily use it in recording situations thus far, and have gotten lots of compliments on the improvement of my upright tone. Are use it with my iPhone, and the interface is fantastic. I can’t recommend this pedal enough.
 
Hey Source Audio Guys, the more I delve into this thing, the more satisfied I become, but in my delving I have a design question for you: Why does the EQ2's Q-factor default at 1.0 (1 1/3 octaves)? Since you've got each band's center frequency defaulting at one octave apart, wouldn't the default Q naturally be 1.4 (one octave)? I'm curious what led to choosing 1.0, which would make smaller moves in adjacent bands overlap and create cumulatively larger cuts or boosts.

It doesn't matter, cause we can set it to whatever suits us, but I wondered.

There ya go, I knew it. Getting all technical now, you got sucked into it, just like I did. I'm wanting the LFP and HPF to have more of an adjustable range in that pedal.

Well now I think I know the answer: The EQ2 is a continuously-variable Q equalizer, like an API. When you set your Q-factor setting, what you're actually doing is setting the Q for the 6dB boost/cut setting, and below 6dB it gets wider, and above 6dB it gets narrower, which can be very musical indeed.

So, boosting 6dB with a Q of 3.0 means if you keep boosting up to +18dB, your Q narrows to around 8.33, getting more surgical the higher the boost or cut. I sat there wondering why I was hearing very narrow notches when I cranked the gain down to around -10dB (but with very low Q-factors) and this is why. Maybe because I was thinking of EQ2 as a "graphic EQ" but it's way more than that.

This pedal sounds great in its current design. I would, however, love to have the option to switch to constant-Q, like many classic graphic EQs. You could hide it on the Neuro page as to not confound those who just want to twiddle one knob. Since you guys at SA are such wizards, perhaps you could see your way clear to adding this feature in a future update? It would only increase the usefulness of EQ2.

I'm also finding that when I power up my EQ2, it totally ignores Expression over Midi when using the 5 pin Din midi cable. The unit has to be rebooted after my board has been powered up. The EQ is completely unresponsive to the expression pedal until I power it down and back up. Curiously, it doesn't happen if I plug the until into my Hub...so it's something to do with the Midi Din connection.

At first I thought it might be a power supply issue, but it's a 500ma feed and it's only got A lunar, Neuro Hub and the EQ2 on that particular feed. If I unplug the Lunar, I still have the same issue. Then I realised that this issue doesn't occur if I connect the EQ2 to my Neuro Hub. I know that it's not an issue with the midi out signal from my Boss ES-5 because other pedals are receiving the same signal and acting upon their instructions. If I delay the powering up on the EQ2 until after my board has powered up, I still get the same issue.
