Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Hi there, ive been browsing the SASS with great interest over the last few weeks since I purchased a a manta, OFD, hub and expression pedal . I thought this may be a good place to post a problem I have with my setup....

when using my expression pedal as a conventional wah, it responds fine. but if I use it as a slow gradual swell, the pedal does not respond. until I move it faster and it will catch up with itself. I have the pedal plugged onto the sensor input on the hub.

I assume the pedal is not faulty as it responds to fast movements, so maybe its a software/firmware thing? I have already updated my pedals to the latest firmware through the hub manager.

thanks in advance

GD
Bump I'm actually running into the same issue. I just tried out my expression pedal now. I have a Moog EP3 if that helps.

I figured it out, never mind. It was the knob on my expression pedal, I just didn't have it set correctly.

There's the complete rig btw! A bit of a cable mess right now.:p

Can you explain what you did to resolve the issue? do you mean the range adjust knob?

Oh yes sorry, I should have explained better. My range adjust knob was at 9 o'clock and when I changed it to 5 o'clock, the pedal worked perfectly. That's all I changed actually. If you have any other issues let me know!

Hi,

The sensor input of the HUB is intended for use with the Hot Hand. The reason you're not able to send slower motions through it with the Expression Pedal is due to a smoothing filter that helps with the Hot Hand signal. If you'd like to send data from your expression pedal through the hub, use the quarter inch expression input. It will track all speeds of motion. :) If you check out page three of the user manual it tells you more about each input/output: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Hello,

Based on your description, I think I may know the cause of the problem. It's likely that there is a channel mismatch.

First, let me explain the difference between the Hub channel and the pedal channels (IDs).

The Hub channel defines which channel the Hub will respond to on its MIDI Input port. For example, if you set the Hub channel to 5, then you must make sure that your MIDI controller sends program change messages to the Hub using channel 5. The Hub channel can be edited in the Hub Manager by clicking the Edit Hub Hardware Settings button.

EAmlsAW.jpg

Then, there is the Pedal Channel, also called the Pedal ID. The Pedal Channel/ID is something that exists to distinguish between two devices of the same type. For example, if you had 2 Mantas on your board, both connected to the Hub, you need to assign each one to a separate channel (ID) in order for the Hub to be able to communicate with each one of them separately. So, you could set one Manta to ID 1 and the other Manta to ID 2, and this would let you use multiple Mantas on the same board, in the same scene, at the same time... each doing something differently. Pedals will only respond to messages that the Hub sends to them using their unique ID number.

The important thing to note here is that the Pedal Channel (or ID) is completely separate from the Hub's channel. It's kind of like an internal channel number that the Hub uses to differentiate between multiple devices attached to itself. In 99% of cases, you want the Pedal ID to be set to 1. You only should ever change the Pedal ID if you have more than one of the same pedal type on the same board, connected to the same Hub.

So, my guess is that you may have possibly set one of your Pedals to have an ID that is not 1. Double-click on the pedal in the My Board - Connected Devices display and make sure that Channel (Device ID) is set to 1.

gIH5F8A.jpg

When you add a pedal to a new scene, the Pedal Channel will default to whatever it is set to in the My Board - Connected Devices display. So, for example, if your pedal was set to Pedal Channel 4, and you add it to a new Scene, it will use Pedal Channel 4 by default. Everything will work fine in the editor window.

However, when you load a preset from the preset list, the pedal will stop responding. This is because the Pedal Channel is stored as a part of the preset, and all of our standard presets use Pedal Channel 1. You can see the Pedal Channel by clicking the Show Additional Controls button. It is labeled there as MIDI Channel but this is actually an incorrect label - it should really say Pedal Channel. This should be set to 1.

ZwiLOiF.jpg

So, the key here is to make sure that all of your pedals are set to Pedal Channel 1. This is not related to the Hub Channel, so don't worry. You can set the Hub to whatever channel you need.

Please try that and let me know if it resolves the problem.

it's working!!!!!! that was it :)

thanks !!!

@Nathan Navarro and any of the other SA people:

I tried saving a scene at PCs 100 and 101. I was able to semi-successfully do this BUT then I had the behavior which I've documented before where the pedals keep flipping back to one of the scenes randomly.

To recap this issue (from a few months ago), I believe that sometimes my Hub reverts to Scene 0 (or the scene corresponding to PC 0, I don't know remember if the list starts at 0 or 1 in the Hub Manager) without any clear provocation. I have not been able to determine for certain if I have a lemon of a Hub or if this is a quirk of my MIDI setup revealing a secret bug in the Hub. However, I've ruled out as best as I can that a PC 0 command is actually being sent to the Hub. The only thing being sent to the Hub is MIDI Clock from a Beat Buddy. There did seem to be some correlation there. My kludge was to put a "blank" scene as Scene 0. But this means I can only save scenes to non-0 locations through the Hub Manager, not from the device itself (because even if I send it PC 87 or whatever, it will jump back to PC 0 before I can change settings and save it from the Hub interface).

I vaguely recall that others reported some issues with MIDI Clock into the Hub. Were those ever resolved? If not, this could be related. I am the only person I know who has both a Beat Buddy and a Hub, so that is a possibility, but still, that should work. The same Beat Buddy clock goes to multiple other devices (Reflex, 2 H9s, M5, Infinity) without any issue.

The Hub in my setup simply does not work properly, and it's become very frustrating, especially considering that I love my other SA gear---Manta, Bass OFD, and Reflex. You guys have a 1-year warranty, correct? If I were more confident in the firmware I would be positive that this was a hardware issue and send it in for warranty service.

Exciting News! I am now able to go back and edit the club member list at the top of this thread. I can now do a good job of keeping it updated and accurate. Please give updates.

So ... now that everything works ... it's easier to craft the effect

i finally found the HH setting i wanted ... mixed the manta with 3leaf audio You're Doom and EBS octabass in parallel ....

only problem..... need to remember ... when you close the pedal setting window ... to press "save and close"

i lost these settings .... heheheheheheeheheh

i guess i can find it again ...

thanks for the replies, ill be testing out the solutions tonight and ill let you know how I get on.

I have a few un related soundblox questions whilst im here....

1. assuming my expression pedal is plugged into the Manta via the TRRS cable, should I be able to control parameters on the the OFD (which is plugged into the hub)?

2, is there a central resource for users to share presets for the manta and other SB2 pedals? I feel that seeing other peoples presets, especially manta presets, may open up new ideas for my own.

3. are there any real world benefits to joining the SASS club list or is it just a bit of fun?

4. is there any way to make preset 1 on the hub manager, correspond to preset 1 on the midimouse? currently 1=0

thanks in advance, and apologies if these questions have been asked before.

bests,

bests,

1) The best way to set things up is have the expression pedal go into the hub via TRS and then connect all SB2 pedals to the Hub via TRRS. Is there any reason you are not doing it this way?
2) There was a drop box set up by TB folks. I agree we can do something better.
3) The big benefit is more fun!!
4) Nathan will get back on this one.

bests,

4. Sorry, no. The numbering is set on both the HUB and Midi Mouse. This will most likely be an editable feature on the SA Soleman... coming soon!
