Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Some questions, not urgent though since I'm still waiting for the Aftershock and Android support.

I was looking through the product descriptions and the videos. The neuro app video looks quite impressive but I want to clarify some things about burning settings to the toggle positions.

What exactly can you do with this? Are the following options possible:

1) You configure the 3 toggle switch positions to a certain preset. Say toggle left is univibe with settings A, toggle middle is univibe with settings B, toggle right is classic phaser with some settings C. As long as your toggle is on the left, when you stomp the footswitch on and off, it'll always go to settings A, right? Now, say you have settings A engaged (i.e. toggle left and footswitch engaged). What happens when you turn the knobs? Based on my experience with the presets on the Soundblox series, would this happen: if you stomp to engage the effect, it goes exactly to your settings A. But if you tweak any of the knobs when it's engaged, that particular setting will jump to whatever the knob is showing. For example, say settings A has a very low depth. No matter what's the current position of the depth knob, whenever you stomp to engage, it'll always go to low depth. However, if you stomp it first, then turn the depth knob, it'll jump to whatever setting the depth knob is on?

2) Extension from #1: Can you save these presets on the fly without the neuro app? For example, let's say I use the neuro app to define the settings A, B and C described above. I bring my pedals to a gig, but when soundchecking I realize that this venue could use a bit more depth on Setting A (toggle switch to the left). So I turn the depth knob up. Can I save it so that throughout the night, whenever I engage the effect with the toggle switch to the left, it goes to the new Setting A with more depth rather than the setting I previously set on the neuro app?

3) Can I burn changes to what each knob does? For example, can I set the depth knob to adjust a different parameter instead? For example, can I set it so that when my toggle is left, the depth knob adjusts depth, but when my toggle is in the middle, it adjusts some other parameter instead?

4) Can I burn routing options? So for example, I can set it so if the toggle switch is on the left, when I engage it, it runs an effect loop, but when it's on the right, it doesn't run the effects loop?

5) Can I save different pedals to the presets? E.g. if I buy a Lunar Phaser, can I set toggle left to be a univibe, toggle middle to be a quad chorus and toggle right to be a shadow flanger?

I just picked up a Volto last night. Thought you guys might want to see how it handles Source Audio pedals. I plugged it into my current downsized setup and added my guitar OFD at the back. This is a handphone video running through a tiny amp, so don't expect good sound quality.

Firstly, the Volto can definitely more than handle the current draw of the pedals.

Second, there is definitely some background noise, but it's definitely not any more noise than feeding them off a wall wart. In fact, after I uploaded the video, I went to grab my wall wart and tried swapping back and forth between volto and wall wart. No difference in background noise level. At rehearsals and gigs I use the wall wart and it's not noticeable in the mix, just annoying when there should be silence. Also, keep in mind that there's quite a lot of gain going on in the chain, so it's to be expected. In fact, the Darkglass is the biggest culprit of shrill background noise (which is apparently the normal behaviour). Again, after uploading, I tried unplugging everything else and just running the Darkglass alone and it has the same amount of noise, so it's not that it isn't playing nice with the Source Audio pedals (or vice versa)

Finally, the noise gates on the Source Audio pedals can handle this amount of background noise easily. If I'm just running a simple light overdrive, low to medium will do. If I'm doing full on fuzz, I'll have to set it on high. That said, the background noise does creep back in as the note fades out.

Tonight I've a small gig in school, I'm planning to bring the Volto and see how well it works there. This weekend I'm also planning to upsize my board a little, put the OFD back in, I'll update on how that works. (can't wait for the aftershock to be released! And I'd really love a One-sized version of the Multiwave. I don't use more than one preset per song so that'd actually be better for me heh)

Hi Nic,

1) When burning a sound from the Neuro App to a given toggle switch, the parameters will reflect the knobs on the interface of the pedal. This allows you to have three base effects within the pedal, accessible through the toggle switch, but the knob positions will not be stored. You're able to save a fourth sound in "Preset Mode," in which all of the parameters jump to their saved value, regardless of the knob positions. You can also use the One Series with the Neuro HUB, which allows you to save 128 sounds and knob positions of five pedals.

2) You are able to make changes and save the settings of one sound in, "Preset Mode," without using the Neuro App. When being used with the Neuro HUB, you can save changes without the Neuro App as well.

3) This function will be available once the USB editor is released.

4) Yes! Awesome, right?

5) Yes! You can do this among each effects group. For example, any kind of modulation effect (Chorus, Flanger, Phaser) can be save to a pedal within the same group. The same goes for overdrive/distortions.

Oh man, I'm getting caught again in Source Audio's gravitational pull of awesomeness... their One series is genius and the possibilities of a Source Audio delay has my head spinning. Once it's out, I definitely want to replace the Aqua Puss slot on my board for a Nemesis, seems like it'd be amazing for bass with all of the control options available - I would've loved for a Tone control onboard, but I'm assuming that there will be extensive EQ options on the trails through the editor software.

Also would love to pick up a Vertigo tremolo, I've been using my DIY trem a lot more lately...

I have a feature suggestion for the REFLEX. Right now, it eats batteries. This is my fault, because I forget to turn it off. But you could install a firmware update where it shuts itself off after a period of non-use, and then turns on when you hit the pedal, like the Tech21 MIDI Mouse. A battery in that thing lasts YEARS. I realize that if I remembered to turn it off, this would not be an issue, but I can't be the only one with this particular problem.

Otherwise, loving it as an expression pedal for my H9 (via MIDI). I will eventually also experiment with it on the Bass OFD, but right now I'm just using my bass volume knob for some extra push when I need it.

Hey all!! So I've had the OFD for a few months now and am loving it, since I don't have the Hub I use one channel with "tube crunch" and the other is "Muff pi"...

For awhile I've read about how great the "Green Muff/Civil War era" is on bass, I've never played through one so I'm not sure how one would sound!!

So, anyone got settings or tips to achieve this, or even similar to the Black Russian muff(I did own one of these years ago), I am happy with it but wonder if i could get it better

How would you know when the pedal is inactive though? Sometimes you leave an expression pedal at a fixed angle. And if any of the outputs is used for an LFO it will be active regardless.

Maybe if the timeout is very long.

@Nic. My pleasure. Can you specify, "Pity you can only edit preset mode without the app/hub?" I want to make sure I understand your question. :)

Hey Nathan,

It's regarding this answer you gave, "You are able to make changes and save the settings of one sound in, "Preset Mode," without using the Neuro App."

Okay I think I should also make sure I really understand your response.

What I was looking for would be something like with the Soundblox2 series, where you have two presets. If you've tweaked any settings on one of the presets, but don't save it, it'll vanish when you turn it off and on again. But if you tweak the settings, then you hold down the button, it'll save. I'm thinking of situations where, while soundchecking, I adjust my preset a little (maybe dial in a bit more distortion or add treble or something depending on the venue's amp) and then I save it to go for the rest of the night.

On the other hand, for the One Series, I assumed that your answer meant I can't do a similar thing. For example, I would not be able to do the following process:
1) At home, set up presets for the 3 toggle switch positions and burn them in.
2) When soundchecking, realize that my left toggle switch preset needs a bit more drive, so I engage that preset by having the toggle switch to the right and clicking the footswitch. Then I adjust the knob until it gets me the amount of drive I need. After that, I do something... maybe press and hold the footswitch while the toggle is on the right. Then for the rest of the night, whenever the toggle is on the right and I engage the pedal, it'll go to the updated preset with increased drive.

Of course, I guess I can just do it from phone during soundcheck. But I guess that means I can't change the preset during the gig itself unless I leave the phone plugged in all the way (although I suppose there also won't be many opportunities to change presets during the gig, so this is actually quite a minor point).

In any case, I'm looking forward to getting an Aftershock... and if a One Series version of the multiwave and manta comes out, I can really downsize my board quite a fair bit.
I've a bit of a dilemma now actually where I want to put the manta at the end of my chain, but then I won't have a noise gate at the end. Having the Aftershock at the start and routing everything through it would make things so much easier.

Ah, I gotcha. ;) The "Preset Mode" of the One Series functions the same way as saving a preset on a Soundblox 2 pedal. The only difference is that you're able to save one preset, rather than two in a SB2.

You're able to save a different base effect to each toggle switch position, but parameters that can be accessed via the knobs on the interface of the pedal will not be stored. For example, you can add drive to your presets at soundcheck, via the knobs on the interface, but you can't save them to each toggle switch position individually. The parameters that you tweak via the knobs will be applied to every toggle switch position, and the presets will always reflect the position of the knobs.

I'd recommend using the One Series with a HUB for the amount of programmability it sounds like you want. You'd be able to make changes to each setting individually, and save them in place. ;)

@Nathan Navarro thanks! In that case, what does "burning" to toggle switch mean? Does it include the positions of the switches and the internal parameters, or just the type of effect? (I.e. instead of having tube, fuzz and gates fuzz on the Aftershock, burning just replaces that with one of the other 12 distortion types?)
It burns all things set up in the Neuro App EXCEPT for the 4 knob parameters. Those are still dictated by the actual knob position. If you think about it, that is the right way to do it (we debated this for a while before making the call).

I just added a Dimension Reverb and a Hot Hand 3. Can you update#7, again, please?

Time to get busy setting up some Hub presets!

Niiiiice. That is exactly the perfect solution IMO, and that's why I was wondering about tweakability. Alright that pretty much settles it then!

I've looked through this thread, but given the number of pages I may of missed it if it has been discussed before.

Has anyone used an expression pedal with the OFD? Any good? Probably more useful with modulation effects. I was wondering what it would be like to control the clean or drive using it, for building heavy swells.
