When running in stereo, the knobs will affect both channels simultaneously. You might have better luck making these edits in the Neuro App with the devoted left and right channel controls. Then, try burning your preset to a destination in, "Preset Mode."

Hi all,

I have a MIDI-related question. First of all, I am a complete newbie when it comes to MIDI stuff, I used to be just-turn-the-knobs kind of guy. Plus, I used to prefer pedals with no more than 3 knobs on them :)

I started using SA products last year, currently own a BEF Pro & OFD. I also want to add a Mantra and maybe Line 6 M5 for other effects. Now, I understand that if I get a Hub, I can then change presets on both the OFD & Mantra. The Hub also has the MIDI thru capability, so it seems that I should be able to control either an M5 or the BEF Pro via MIDI using the Hub. Is this correct?

I did some research and it seems that this should work, as long as I have the Hub and the MIDI-controlled pedal on different MIDI channels. Is this correct? So, as long as I get a MIDI switcher that can transmit to 2 channels separately, I should be OK. For example, the One Control Gecko seems to fit the bill. Does this make sense? Or this is more complicated than I think?

Maybe you could suggest an alternative way to make this work.

As always, I do appreciate your help.

That combo will work. I used to use a Line 6 M5 and M9 (at different times) with my hub attached to OFD and Manta.

You don't necessarily need each pedal to be different channels. To keep my board simple I put everything on the same channel so when I switched a preset, everything would change.

Keep in mind, with the M series you only can switch 24 presets via midi, which is still a lot, but anything over PC 23 that's sent won't change anything on the Line 6.

Adam, thank you for your reply. But how would I actually program this? For example, if I want overdrive, filter and chorus from the Line 6, how do I set it up?

For source audio pedals you'd select a PC message from your controller, adjust/engage your SA pedals, then hold the save button on the Hub. That will recall those pedals when that PC is selected.

For the Line 6, It's different, beat with me as the exact wording and process might be different than I remember. First off, I used scene mode which allows the entire pedal to change (M9 has three selectable at once, so this allows a complete change of all three) If you are doing this at the same time as the Hub scene editing then after you select that PC then you select all your effects and settings for the M9 as well. There's 2 options for saving, one (and default I think) is auto save, so you won't have to do anything. The next time you select a PC it will recall those effects/settings, the only downside is any engaging/disengaging or editing will save and be recalled again the next time. The manual save is better after you're done editing, I don't remember the exact process for saving in this mode but it's better to prevent accidentally changing something.

The manual has a MIDI chart to show what can be edited and what changes, etc. hope that helps!

The key thing to remember is that the Hub is always listening for a midi PC message. When it hears "go to 1" it sends a message of all the saved states to each SB2 pedal. But, you need to have the Line 6 pedal send that midi PC message. Likewise, the SB pro will be listening.

As noted many folks have been successful with this setup.

i have almost the exact same setup.

put the hub last in the chain as sometimes it fails to pass "through" midi PC data.

In this case the M5 will have to be last as it doesn't have a 'thru' option. If your only sending PC messages the hub won't have issues sending anything, I've never had a problem with that setup.

YMMV ... I think it may depend on how many PC/CC messages you send in a burst. If you have many pedals, each on its own channel, there may be problems using the Hub's MIDI Thru. If it's just one or two it probably works fine.

I'm looking forward to an update that could improve the Hub's performance.

IME I think MIDI clock also tends to give the Hub problems.

I have no idea what active sense messages are, but this reminds me to ask certain builders about it...

It's a "checking if the MIDI connection is still active" message that not many use anymore, though Boss does. It's sent at least once every 300 milliseconds. Some products, like Midi Solutions Quadra Merge filter these messages out, since they are really not useful.
