Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

And to follow up to that, if I select a "processed" output so it can be connected to a third party pedal, what would be the best settings on the smooth/depth knobs that are neutral for when I switch back to a SB2 pedal?

The BEF and the MBD continue to surprise me with new and usable sounds.

Hmm. So reading this I realize I am confused. I thought that the sensor output was NEVER processed when hooked up to a SB2 pedal through a multifunction port? I.e., so that one could have unprocessed output through the multifunction port to a SB2 pedal, and then processed output through the expression pedal to a 3rd party pedal? Which part of my thinking is wrong here?

I just edited that statement, for I didn't need to include the line about 3rd party pedals for that mode.

With SB2 pedals you have a choice if you want a unprocessed (inactive depth and smooth knobs) or processed signal (active depth and smooth knobs) coming from the Sensor port of the Hot hand 3 receiver. If may be appropriate to have an unprocessed signal for the SB2 Orbital and Manta, but processed for the Multiwaves, Reverb, and OFD's because they don't have Depth or Speed controls on the pedals themselves.

The Expression Port always sends a processed signal (active depth and smooth knobs), so it doesn't matter what color the mode light is. This is because the assumption is its connected to a 3rd party pedal, thusly making my last remark unnecessary.

Let me know if this makes sense!

Just for a follow up... with a green mode light, you'll be unprocessed for the SB2's, and processed for the 3rd party pedals.

Okay, even though I phrased it kind of backwards above, this is more or less what I was thinking, that there was a way to send processed to a 3rd party and unprocessed to my Manta. So that's very helpful, thanks.

Got it. Thanks! I really need to play with my HH3 more with 3rd party pedals, now that I've had a lot more practice with it on the Manta and have a much better "feel" for it.

Getting ready to redo the board finally and after all this reading and gathering gear I started doing my routing and planning and I came up with a question that stopped me in my tracks. I have 4- SB2's, PEQ, DExP, HH3 and I just got a HUB, Gecko and a Iguana Tail 2 looper (5 loops). I was planning using some of my other pedals grouped by kind. Stereo Chorus with my Orbital etc. I know all the SB2's are linked to the HUB through the TRSS cables but if I have the different groups are on separate cabeled loops, how does this effect my scenes saved on the HUB. If different pedals are in different scenes but in different loops how are they affected directly by the HUB? Does that work with various loops on in the IguanaTail being on or off when calling up scenes with the SB2 pedals possibly in a loop that could be off on one pedal and on with another pedal? Does the HUB override the looper controls. Do the SB2 need to be isolated?

Or...AM I JUST TOTALLY WRONG IN MY THINKING?

Do I need to just have all the SB2 Pedals on one loop and have all the other pedals on other loops and not mix and match? Being a noob with MIDI, am I applying regular routing thought to the MIDI process and missing the mark?

I'm ready to start making up my George L's cables to length and this question I have determined both placement and order.

My guess would be that the looper doesn't affect the "scenes" at all. The "scenes" dictate the sounds on the pedals (like twisting the knobs), but the looper dictates whether they are on/off in your chain. Does the looper respond to MIDI commands?

Okay, a little help here! I tried using my HH3 with my Line 6 M5 tonight. It was extremely difficult to program. But maybe the problem was I was using the HH3 to program it? I have it set for X-axis output. I tipped it one way (letting gravity do the work) and tried to set one extreme of the expression parameters, then I tipped it the other way to set the other extreme. But things kept jumping around. Just for a simple volume pedal, I would set it one way to off, and then when I set it the other way, the "off" part "followed" the "on" part, so I always had a limited range. Can you actually program it this way, or should I program it with a different expression pedal, and then use the HH3 with the pre-programmed ranges?

Yeah, I'm gonna need you to post a follow up, sir. I just got the Iguana Tail today, and the Gecko should be on it's way on Monday. I'm trying my best to wrap my head around how to hook it all up...I'm gonna tear my board apart next week when I have most everything, but I'm feeling a bit inadequate since I can't seem to grasp how to put it all together.

Probably shouldn't have posted this out loud...

When using my hh3 with my h9 I struggled at first too. The easiest way to program it is to turn the depth full counter clockwise, set your "heel" parameter, turn depth full clockwise, set your "toe" parameter. Then set the depth knob to wherever you usually leave it. I always leave it full counter clockwise. Wave your ring around and see if the led of the m5 respond the way you want.

One of my fav settings using the hh3 with the m9 was the octave model. Dry signal off, octave at 100%, using the HH to sweep the tone knob. Gives a fantastic LPF sort of sound and is fatter than the proper filters in the m series.

Thanks. So as you are doing this, what are you doing with the HH3? Just leaving it steady on a table or something? Also, where do you like your "Smooth" control?

Ya just set the HH aside, it doesn't even need to be turned on. Actually if it's off then it's truly just the receiver setting the parameters, so that might be better.

I leave my smooth around 2oclock. I constantly fiddle with it though because some days it feels too jumpy, and others it feels less responsive. Probably just my perception changes based on caffeine, energy of songs, alcohol, rather than the actual reaction of the HH.
