Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Hey Brett,

Many thanks for addressing all of these questions! I really do genuinely appreciate all the questions Source Audio in general and you in particular have answered for me over the last two weeks. I'm not sure how to say that any more strongly without being weird(er) about it. I know I've asked a lot and you guys (and again, you in particular) really have gone above and beyond. Everything has been answered to my satisfaction (although I'm still looking forward to seeing the HH3/M-series video), and now it's a matter of toying with things to set them up practically for what I want to do.

I will have to test everything you've said. I would rather not mutilate the rubber stoppers on the Dual EP while I'm still checking it out. I can probably live with one of my aforementioned solutions (either just using and programming it in reverse using the range knob and a TS cable, or using a TRS cable and only using the first 50% of the treadle action) if I can do something with the stoppers and zero point that I'm happy with.

P.S. Since Roger said you're in on product development, at the risk of being super annoying let me advocate one last time for an Eventide setting on the forthcoming Digital Expression Pedal. I guess if you already have a Line6 setting like on the HH3 you would only need to have a way to modify the range (25 kOhm for Eventide vs. 10 kOhm for Line6). Maybe you also want to consider modifying the pedal somehow in order to get that proper zero point without altering the rubber stoppers? Just a thought. Maybe that is mechanically more problematic than it superficially seems to me.

Seems to me, machining one surface the thickness of the rubber o ring would solve that problem very quickly in production runs. No?
Or recessing one or both surfaces enough to have the foot tray contact a flush rubber surface? Or....
Having a stop incorporated into the travel so heel down does not actually make contact, although storage and strength wise, and for accidental full weight step onnage, full contact of some sort is probably more structurally sound. I think I made up a word or two in there, sorry.

Or maybe an adjustable stopper so the pedal can be dialed in manually via "adjustable rubber stopper". Might help get the closest to "0". Maybe a software tweak may be possible to zero out "calibrate" the pedal values? I am no engineer, just ideas.

If you use multiple settings "more than two" the HUB is crucial. I could not go without it. For $100 it is a steal, more so now with the new manager. It seals the deal for me.

There is still the question of the controller...

Yeah in fairness it's hard to have one without the other. All said and done, it's at least a $200 investment. Still, the bang for you buck....you figure picking up a second OFD for 2 more presets will put you $50 shy of that, not to mention all of the features they just added in to the Hub backend.

I thought I'd never need something like the Hub. And I guess if I wanted to stick to the basics and have one OD tone, One Fuzz tone, etc....but...this is 'MURICA dammit! I just wish my other pedals were this flexible....

Imagine a MIDI control system that works with analog pedals using small mounted servos to your pedal's knobs, when you change a preset, it changes the knobs for you....

+1 on the first part, and yeah, I can see that, on the second.

I have a question. Last night while gigging I was using the manta with the hub and midi moose. When I switched from a clean sound back to the manta patch "with hothand" it went to this very distorted sound "not the programed sound"? I hit the patch several times and still not right. I changed banks and went back to the patch and it was fine. It was like a random glitch? Very strange. And unnerving.:nailbiting:

As usual, i'm excited as hell about the HM2.0 but when I tried to install it, an error message explodes on the screen, the MSVCR.DLL seems to be missing...I've spend two hours, yesterday, roaming the Net in hope of a solution. I've tried reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and a few other solutions I found but still I cannot install the Hub Manager. I know this is not a computer community but you guys are the best hope I have...

I had exactly the same problem! Reinstall visual c++ redistributable and there is another file grouped with it that you should see right beside it (can't remember what it's called) and then restart! Got it working for me.

No problem Bellbass! Frustrated me for a good hour. Just be sure to restart. This is such a useful tool you guys. The biggest advantage for me personally is visualizing parameters so my levels are more in unity. I've got 4 of our songs mapped out with 4-5 presets each. Cherish this fellas because we're on the forefront of pedalboard technology of the future!

Adamixoye, you do have a couple factor pedals that could act as your midi controller. I briefly used my h9 to do just that. Your m5 could do it too in a more limited capacity.

So this is an interesting point. I know some MIDI but not a lot. I hook up MIDI clock between devices. I think I understand CC vs. PC even though as of now I haven't used any (I'm looking to experiment with daisy-chaining some expression pedal CC soon!).

One thing that would keep me from doing it the way you are suggesting---and indeed what I think is the downside of the way the Hub goes about things---is that on my Factor and M5 pedals I don't construct presets by unified songs or sounds---I create sounds I like on each pedal individually, and then I like to mix-and-match. My understanding is if I use the M5 or a Factor pedal to send MIDI PC, I'm essentially "linking" those presets on those pedals with the corresponding presets on any Soundblox 2 Pedals. And I'm not sure I want to do that.

What I would really like---and I don't know if it is possible or if an existing product does this, but I assume it's at least possible---is an independent controller that can send different MIDI PC signals on multiple MIDI channels? Then depending on how that controller is configured, I would like to be able to program it so that there are times when I am changing patches on just one pedal, and at others I'm changing patches on multiple pedals simultaneously.

Adam that's exactly the problem have. Only one off top I know of is the behringer midi controller.

I should say that I do get that it's simply a different way of looking at things. 128 presets is a lot of sounds; if you carefully plan a Source Audio board, it's not an unreasonable way to do it, to have a handful of sounds on each pedal and you mix and match to fill out some fraction (up to 100%) of those 128 presets.

However, it's just simply not how I do it. And it's actually part of the reason I went away from true multi-FX (like Boss the GT series) and got into the more "modular" idea of individual pedals that I turn on and off for individual sounds. It gets a little complicated with the digital pedals I have that have presets, but just "single sound" presets (compared to "true multi-FX" that have "patches" of multiple FX at once). But I still mix and match those. I create a series of sounds that I like on a single pedal, and then I experiment with other sounds from other pedals and whether or not they match.

I should add that to some degree this is driven by my playing situation. Playing both bass and guitar in a worship setting, where every week I play we might have a fairly new song where I want one or two different sounds, it doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense for me to preplan a bunch of "board presets"---again, another reason I moved away from full multi-FX. The modular approach has served me well for this.

I hold out a small bit of hope that the product preview Roger shared a few pages ago might have something to say about all of this...

Possible bug report with the new Hub manager:

I made 2 changes to my Dimension 'Verb -
1) Set it for soft bypass to enable reverb trail
2) Updated the pedals firmware

I can no longer set the Expression pedal for 'Reverb Send'. I press the Control Input button until all led's are off, then hold the button. The Led's blink twice. I then set the Control Input to 'EXP' & the pedal does nothing. ?

Is this a bug with the new firmware, possibly the soft bypass doesn't work with Reverb Send, or is it user error on my end?

****update***: User error. Pedal is fine. I just needed to cycle power and unplug/replug the multifunction ports.
