Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

I have not complained about this in a while, so I cant help myself. :)
Reflex was very expensive to develop. Custom housing. Had to work with lots of things.
I think we will do another version some day. We are wiser today than back then.
So, that is the whole story.

Yep...sorry!
Ironically...many Midi guys now want it just for the ability to send Midi Expression...over midi. After it's demise, there were a lot less options on the market. I suggest that a revisit someday as a far simpler unit that offered a reduced feature set. No LFO's...just expression out over midi CC and maybe dual analogue expression out. Keep it simple but effective. No fancy displays...plug in via Neuro desktop to edit. Midi in and midi out.
As a separate item, I also loved your idea of the small midi switch / loop. A great idea and very unique. It's a shame that never made it to market.

Quick question. I took a look at the Source Audio Neuro Hub manual, I might have passed by what I'm looking for.

Can you use the hub and connect a midi switcher to the usb port on it? I don't want to use a computer live. I'd want to use the midi in to connect to an MPC for clock, but use a midi switcher (DMC Micro) to usb to run through presets that I've set up.

This is all kind of new to me. I'm guessing the answer is yes. But I want to make sure my ducks are in a row before I start buying things. If not I'm assuming I'd need a midi switcher with midi in and out.

Thanks!
Ideally you would get a breakout cable for the DMC to give you separate MIDI in and out to run the pedals in a chain, run the MPC into that and then the Out into the Neuro MIDI in. I don’t think you can directly connect the DMC to the Neuro USB.

So another midi switcher then. haha. The usb adapter was already a problem with my OCD. I'll need to do more research.

I’m pretty certain the DMC is designed for MIDI in and out (I don’t have the Mini but do have the DMC 8 which has similar connectivity), it’s just that putting multiple MIDI jacks takes a lot of space and the majority of users are only going to use the MIDI out. DMC sells the MIDI breakout cables for this purpose on their site.

Sure I understand. I just don't want a bunch of extra crap dangling out the back like an Iproduct. I'd rather get the correct product for my needs with all the proper I/O. Instead of having extra points of failure to worry about. :) Irrational fear or OCD? Yes. haha.
Someone is currently selling the C4 and the DMC as a combo. So I thought I'd see what's up. I appreciate the help.

Just to clarify- do you have other SA pedals or just a C4? Because the C4 doesn't need a Neuro Hub to receive MIDI from the DMC (just in case you weren't aware!)

I have an Aftershock. I was looking at adding either a C4 or Spectrum and a few others down the line. Probably a Collider and Lunar. I was under the impression I could hook everything up to the Hub to make it easier to edit everything on the computer.

Yep in that case you will need a Hub for presets (at least the Aftershock and Lunar can only access most of the presets via the Hub, while the C4/Spectrum can use Hub or USB Host, and the Collider can use those or standard 5-pin MIDI). Just making sure.

Live jam 12/26 “Belly of the Machine”

My first time taking my C4 out live. It’s really one of my favorite recordings. Part of an instrumental all jams set we did this winter.

Great bass tone! The low notes in the solo sound sick! You should publish the preset, and this clip. Thanks!!

you can do the part of the loop switcher with the majority of the one series pedals. Just use the external loop routing and program a preset to bring in the loop with or without any processing from the one series pedals. This seemed to make more sense and be more cost effective than a dedicated box.

why not use a dmc 3xl, then you’d have midi clock and preset control in one box.

Good point there- the bigger DMCs have clocks built in, either via tap-tempo or programmed BPM. That would work if he is OK with the MPC clock being controlled by the DMC tempo control (or presets) and not the other way around. Not sure how well an MPC takes to being slaved like that, I've usually seen them used as masters (though I guess people that use them with DAWs are usually slaving them).

Thank you. I think it may be “Funk Dragon,” which has this clip already. There is more splat to my tone, which may be from the super hot passive pickups in my RB850.

I’ll go back in and check what I’ve got loaded up — I forget!

Alright what’s easiest way to deal with frigging around with the volume on every setting. You think that would be worked out in the design
Do you mean Input Volume or Master Volume? “normalizing” the Master Volume wouldn’t be particularly useful because there is a ton going on in the internal signal path that can make each patch louder or quieter (and sometimes you want that too).

There are multiple ways to normalize the Input Volume to best match your particular bass and playing style-

-the easiest is to use the “WYSIWYG” play mode of the pedal (selectable in the app), in which the knob positions of the pedal (not including secondary knob functions) overide those parameters in the saved patch when you call it up- so you can set your Input once, then leave the knob in place and it will be set for all your patches (though it won’t change the saved settings at all). Just be careful with the other knobs as well- this option may not work if you want certain patches to have different Blend settings since that knob will also be active at its position whenever you recall new presets.

-alternatively you can actually save new values by using the pedal in “Preset Mode”. Patches are recalled with the saved values, then move the Input Volume knob to calibrate to your instrument (the light should start to blink indicating you have changed from the saved value) and then hold the footswitch down until the light stops blinking to re-save the new value in place of the old.

-alternatively editing in the app (ideally the desktop version) you can edit by noting the value of Input that best suits your bass and editing/saving/burning each preset with this new value (it is worth it to do this before saving/burning any new presets so you don’t have to do it later, though you can also do it per patch after already burned as well- just requires reburning). This is the way to adjust Master Volume as well.

I approach it by normalizing as best I can between patches, and then run my comp before my C4. I can +/- the output of the comp to compensate for different levels between basses and get a nice signal going into my C4. That way I can just adjust the comp instead of tweaking each patch on the C4... Adjust the output level on the comp until the C4 patches sound "right." It'd be nice if the C4 had a global input volume, but it's no big deal at all. I haven't had any trouble with my comp workaround.

That said, there's really no way around adjusting the input/output of each patch... especially community patches. Like @sunbeast said, there's a lot going on within a patch that can affect perceived volume, but each of us has different gear as well. My patches are designed around my gear, which could be totally different signal levels than the bass/gear you're using.

5sg.

Got my EQ2 working as front end to an hx stomp today. I hadn't spent much time it with lately so I spent some refresher time. I created 2 patches that will serve as my 'channel switch'. The first allows for no signal from input 2 and adds 2.9 db gain. The second allows for no signal from input 1 but does not add any gain. i'll have to play with the hotter of my basses and P Basses to see if 2.9 db is correct or not.

I did a factory reset on my hub and made those the first two presets. 2 Soleman macro's later and I have quiet bass and loud bass channel selecting working.

Got my C4 working in an
hx stomp efx loop as well. Troubles with my Future Impact in the loop but that is another thread...

I think the EQ2 and HX Stomp combination will actually be better than my BassBone. I've been a BassBone guy for at least a decade, maybe longer.
