I understand the TRRS part to the SA pedal, my question is which MIDI TRS standard the SA168 needs?
The SA168 and Artifakt follow the TRS MIDI spec exactly including opto isolation and the mini jack. The 1/4 inch solutions found on other pedals is not an industry standard.

Got it, so if I am understanding correctly, I should be able to use a Type A 5 pin DIN male to 3.5mm TRS to/from the SA168’s MIDI in and through ports.

I appreciate all of the help here! I have just enough of an understanding of how MIDI works to be completely over my head the moment it doesn’t work as expected, which is nearly always.

I guess I just got lucky by using a low profile 5 DIN Midi cable off the EQ2 Midi OUT to the provided SA 168 5 DIN Midi to 1/8" TRS adapter cable. And used Boss 1/8" TRS midi cables between my Boss pedals off the SA SOLEMAN midi #2 OUT and the same Boss 1/8" TRS Midi cable off the SA 168 Midi Thru to the OPUS.

I love it when a plan comes together...

Boss was the first to adopt proper TRS MIDI. Once we saw what they were doing we copied it. Non-standard 1/4" TRS MIDI was never a good idea.

For some closure on this, I got a BOSS 1’ MIDI male DIN to TRS: BOSS - BMIDI-PB1 | MIDI Cable

and it works great either into the MIDI in to the SA168 from the MIDI out from the HX One or from the MIDI through jack on the SA168 to the MIDI in on the HX One.

Thanks, everyone, for helping me through this!

I need some board planning advice.

My board right now goes:
EQ2 -> LA Lady -> Atlas -> Gemini -> Ventris

That's all the room I have on this little board. But I'd like to put the C4 at the front of the chain.

The first option is to replace the EQ2 at the front of the chain (replacing it with the C4). The EQ & clean boost duties could be taken care of by either the Atlas and/or the LA Lady. I often use the EQ2 when I use my bridge pickup-- to boost lows, and overall level. The EQ2 has also proven useful as a swiss-army-knife-- solving even the weirdest of problems. There would be a challenge of accessing the different tones/EQ/boost/drive on the LA Lady and Atlas (either with or without MIDI control). Before, I could get by with just turning pedals on/off and switching presets only on the EQ2.

The second thought is to get a longer pedal board and keep both in the chain.

Any thoughts?

Think of the C4, EQ2, Atlas and LA Lady as TWO Channel pedals. The Gemini and Ventris as STEREO pedals.

You can think of using channels independently on the first four (4) and the modulation with Reverb L/R effect

Don't worry too much about order, consider cable lengths!

An Ultrawave could cover the duties of the EQ2, LA Lady, and Atlas, which would keep things compact.

I was loathe to suggest another pedal as a solution to your problem, but I sort of feel that it’s not fundamentally much different than your consideration of replacing the board itself.

That's an interesting idea. Originally, I had imagined turning the individual pedals on/off as needed; but as I'm also considering the possibility of using MIDI to call up presets, perhaps the Ultrawave is worth considering especially if it does EQ/drive/comp comparably well. I'll starting reading up on it. Thanks!!

I think the Atlas is great, but probably more than a Bass player needs, unless you do a lot of other production or are also a guitar player.

You should really do some research/listen to the UW...nothing does the EQ2...I definitely think the C4 can very likely meet your distortion needs! You could have #1 as full on C4 and #2 as the distortion for your board. So, you could likely dump the LA Lady and not skip a beat...if you can live with limiter and HPF/LPF (EQ2) you could shed the Atlas, too, and free up space and some cash!

I just stripped off my midi and a couple specialty pedals and made a space for my cellphone for a basic board. The Spectrum Intelligent Filter is doing dirt duty. (The C4 has all the SIF features).

I will say, it’s super complicated. It’s definitely not a free lunch.

nothing does the EQ2
I will admit my ignorance here, but is the EQ2 not a graphic EQ?

Thanks. This rig IS for both guitar and bass though rarely on the same gig.

I see that the Ultrawave won’t be an adequate replacement for the either the Atlas or the LA Lady.

The drives in the UW and C4 aren’t comparable to the LA Lady’s drives.

As much as I love the EQ2 (one of the most beautiful and underrated pedals of all time) I think I can use the Atlas and LA Lady to cover those tasks adequately for my needs.

For now I’ll tap dance and forward-bend; but I also have TRS patches thru i/o #2 with all pedals daisy-chained for audio-data. My next project is to work out the best approach for preset and enable-state recall on all or some pedals.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

But any session guitarist will have an EQ pedal and if I had only one pedal as a Bass player...it's EQ2!

Good luck...
