South Florida Luthier?????

You might mean Gary.
Very nice. VERY talkative. Gary only did amp work for me.

Yes, I may have misheard - I'm quite sure that's him, definitely a talkative and friendly guy. I only need to verify my setup and make sure everything is in optimal condition. I have a bit of an initial rattle when I pluck the E and A open strings, and it's not a constant rattle - I only hear it right after I pluck the string, but it does not sustain. I have verified most obvious things: machine gear bolts are nice and tight, strings are wound correctly and there is no excess string rattling, the action is not too low as to cause any rattling. When I apply pressure to the E string peg, it does not occur. Also, the rattle is not amplified, I only hear it because it's next to my ear (pegbox). The only other thing I can think of is that these are relatively new strings, they may still be stretching, but I'd rather have a luthier take a look.

Gary also said that for complex issues/requests, he passes on the instrument to Jimmy, but that for most things he's the one that works on them. Would you trust him with the instrument? I know you said he's only done amp work for you in the past.

I honestly have no clue how he is with an instrument. I imagine he is OK though.

Miami Strings is THE place to go for upright basses, and I recall seeing a baby bass in the corner last time I was there, so if it needs to be set up then I'd go there. I'm sure calling them and speaking to Charlie or Dale would be a good idea. The owner is primarily a bass player so they take good care of them there

Perfect! Thank you - where in Miami are they located? Granted, I could Google it ... I just want to have a general idea. Thanks!

Its in El Portal which is between Miami Shores and Little Haiti. Be warned though, the shop is not in a typical retail area, its in a house (In a fairly nice neighborhood) but the people and work there are very professional and nice. Always call them and make an appointment if you want to visit though, because parking is very limited.

I’m looking for a luthier update. Anyone here recommend someone they’ve used recently? I haven’t had much work done in years.

Looking to get some setups, crowning and fret work done.

Last I heard, Kevin doesn't have a repair shop currently. Steve @ Palm Beach Guitars is still working, did a couple for me earlier this year. Wolfe Guitars in Jupiter does good work, and they have a Plek, though Plek is a bit pricey. I get Pleks for my parts builds from Wolfe, cut new nuts from blanks, etc. and the results have been very good. Even better when Kevin got them after the Plek, but that's not happening for the time being.

What happened to Kevin’s shop?

Yeah, I’ve inquired about the plek at Wolf. It was pretty pricey

Well, I went to this guy on a recommendation from someone.
Steve Ramos fixed me up, and my bass required such a tiny adjustment, that he didn’t charge me. My bass plays way nicer, and I’m already on my way to drop off another bass that needs a bunch of love.
He’s friendly, doesn’t have personality defects, and is only 15 minutes away from me. He’s right off Sample and 95.

Alex Petrounov is the best luthier in town. Hes more in the Boca - Deerfield Beach area but it’s really worth the drive. His new basses are sound and play better than anything I've seen before. And his setups are top notch, I used to have him setup my MTD for years before selling it cause it doesn't even come close to a Petrounov. Heres his info

I tried this guy, today. He does fantastic work. He’s close to me, and he turns around items in hours, not days.

I think I’m done looking.
I will say that he is kind of a character. Lol
