Southampton Boost!!

I have found that for me and my setup is has a sweet spot. It sounds good throughout the turn of the dial. But for me, right around 11 o'clock is where it's at. Keeps my low end pumpin and just plops me right where I want to be when I boost.

I have it at around 10-11 as well right now. Trying different placements and with different preamps.

Hey all,

Glad everyone is liking the pedal! I just got another batch in and really want to spread the word about my Fifth Gear so I'm going to extend the same offer I have on Canadian Guitar Forum. If anyone is interested in the pedal I'll give free shipping within Canada or Continental US. Just PM me if you're interested and we can work out a paypal transfer or something.

Cheers!
Hamish

Wow, that's a sweet deal, considering the price of the pedal already..... Guys, this is a great boost/subtle od/tone sweetener in a compact box, at an amazing price....

Btw, Hamish, shouldn't you be working on my pedals? Lol.

Pretty sure I just found my sweet spot and placement for this pedal. Very early in the chain (on secondary board), 9:15 on the dial. It becomes a growl machine. Keeps the lows, removes some mud, bumps mids maybe?

Anyway, it's before the cali, works with the cali engaged or not. Does wonders with the Meatsmoke. I am sold, it's staying. Just have to figure where is the best spot to for it on the board.

So I've had the chance to use the fifth gear more. At a gig last weekend and at practice tonight. I'm finding that, for my setup, it's pretty sweet on its own. I think it's hurting my bottom a tad if I stack it with dirts. It's like it's too much for my signal to take. It's still boosts through the mix under any circumstance. I just have to watch what I have going at the time I engage it. Oh it's so tasty though. I think I'm gonna try playing my P bass with the fifth gear alone at a next practice coming up. See how it fairs. Or my jazz. What a great tool/pedal to have.

I am liking it more and more at the beginning of the chain, well, toward the beginning. I may record a small loop and show what it does to various other effects.

I will have to try this tomorrow. Maybe that's why it's not liking being stacked with my dirts, cause it's after and it's too much for my signal. Never thought to do that. Good idea man! Thanks.

FG > Orange Pre, pretty good
FG > F2B, pretty good
FG > Frantabit, awesome
FG > RustyBox, awesome
FG > Oxide mixed with Animato, awesome
FG > Meatsmoke, awesome
FG > Fairfield Maude, very nice and lush
FG > Cali76tx, awesome breakup

I finally got around to trying my fifth gear in the practice space with my other pedals today. I'll add to the list from @nshuman two posts back:

FG > Blower Box, awesome.

It sounded a bit more "tubeish-growly" than the blower box by itself. I ended up backing off the gain on the BB a bit compared to what I've used before, because now I have a blower box with an awesome boost.

I couldn't be bothered to move anything on the pedal board, so because of where the free space was, the fifth gear ended up sitting between the ODB-3 I've been using as a dirty boost already and the Blower Box. I can reveal that:

ODB-3 > FG, not very good.

Next time I'm there, I'll switch them so that it's FG > ODB-3 > Blower, so the FG can boost either of those other pedals. I expect "FG > ODB-3" will be a lot better than the other way around.

The FG by itself into a clean solid state amp isn't very good, but I never expected to use it like that. I just had to try it :)

Bias level: I paid full price and (quite reasonable) shipping to Norway for the pedal. Consider this an NPD post.

I hate you all.

I can wreck my own New Year Resolutions, thank you very much, without your help: No new pedals in 2015 excepting a couple I mentioned in the Breeders' thread.

Don't know how I missed the start of this thread, but then I see a bunch of FG hoopla in the Breeders' thread recently and thus am mislead to this old thread. You have all conspired to keep me perpetually poor, I don't know why just yet, but I'm on to your deviously diabolical wallet-wrecking ways...

Sounds great
Small footprint
Fair price
Free shipping (to Canada and its neighbour)
Built well
Built in Canada
Great reviews
Great guy, Hamish

What's that sound? You hear that?

That, my nemeses, is the sound of a crumbling NYReso, distorted beyond recognition, and drowned in the crying wailing echoes of a distraught horder-breeder; broken spiritually, emotionally, monetarily and perhaps even physically should his wife find out...

This Fifth Gear may well be the start of yet another themed board, a 1590a board...

Curse you all.

When you get one, set it to about 9:15. AMAZERFUL!

Agreed, though I ended up at 10 during yesterday's experimentation.

Question for you guys, apologies if this is silly, but when this pedal is in that sweet spot from 9 to 11, is there much of a volume boost being had? I'm looking to add some sort of a boost pedal to my board (dirty is fine). I've already got a lot of "tonal enhancers" running, some of them all the time (Phat Phuk B, etc), so while the tone of the booster is pretty important (of course), I really need to ensure that it can handle volume boosting duties, and sometimes be at least semi-clean when doing so. Would you guys say the Southampton is up to that task?

It does add volume at 9:30, which is the sweet spot for me, at 10-11, it adds a lot more volume. So much so that I need to have my compressor after it if I was to run at 9:30 or 10 and not have a volume spike.
