Being able to have a different sound at the ready when you need it, giving your sound the character you like when you have to use an amp you don't like, things like that.

Not a silly question at all... to answer simply, yes - set the amp flat and dial in a characteristic sound that you like. It's a little more complicated than that in practice... some folks like their amp to provide their signature sound. Nothing wrong with that. In my case, I have to be able to dial up different sounds in a matter of seconds - so a couple of different "flavours" that I can achieve with a switch is the best way for me. Different preamps offer different tonal flavours (it's not just about EQ), and it's handy to have some signature tones ready to hand if you play a range of material.

In my case, the Ictineo has at least three really useable characteristic tones, and it's realistic that I may eventually need to have another one (or two) on my board. But, everybody's individual needs are different, and there are a lot of different preamps with a lot of different features, to satisfy the needs of a lot of different users.

I'm no expert - I'm just finding out about preamps now. So far, I find the "click-a-tone" utility very useful.

To me it is all about convenience. I borrow the amp of someone else so I plug my b7k straight into power amp in. I don't mess up his settings and I always sound like me when playing.

Add to that, I don't own a bass amp at home, so when playing/recording ideas, I use it straight into the audio device.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a little bass amp, an Ampeg BA-108. It's a 20W practice amp and I use it just for practice, I don't take it to rehersals because it would be useless. I just use what they have in the room, like you.
I also have an Atomic Ampli-Firebox in my living room studio which is a digital amp emulator and I use it more than the Ampeg. I was thinking about getting a micro amp with DI out like the Tone Hammer and use it at home without a cab (headphones or active monitors) for practice and also take it to rehersals.

I have zero impulse control, Im just lucky i didn't come across many windownless vans offering me candy as a kid
