Hear hear!!! It had far and away outdone every expectation and prediction long ago. No shame in its performance whatsoever. This was a success beyond all expectation.

I may have missed any discussion (if it happened at all, as it may not be remotely applicable), but given how insanely efficient the rotors have to be, to fly in 1% atmosphere - surely there must be immense benefits to the fuel efficiency of earthbound helicopters, and potentially fixed wing aircraft in 100% atmosphere.

Would be interesting if we ended up going back to fixed wing, propeller driven airliners, to rein in emissions.

I didn't follow the links (recently), but I'm constantly (ok, occasionally) seeing video links off to "breakthrough" hyper-propellor articles. I do expect the research progress from Ingenuity to make its way into the mainstream quickly.

And yeah, I think we'll see hyper-efficient electric fixed wing prop planes in a decade or two.

It was a scout. And a planetary explorer. The future exploration of Mars — and search for past Martian life — will almost certainly involve future aerial craft, and have Ingenuity to thank. After all, this persevering craft proved that flight on Mars, a world with a profoundly thin atmosphere, was possible.

"That remarkable helicopter flew higher and farther than we ever imagined and helped NASA do what we do best — make the impossible, possible," NASA administrator Bill Nelson said when announcing that Ingenuity had taken its final flight.

This, to me, is Ingenuity's success and legacy - so surprisingly extremely successful that every single future surface mission where ever there is atmosphere is likely to include a helo scout component.

The Children of Ingenuity, as it were.

At the risk of stating the obvious, it's easy - and a very human tendency - to look at the device itself, and imbue it with attributes we deem worthy of admiration. It's worth bearing in mind, however, that as well as it performed, it's really "mascot" in a way, for the collective human effort of a host of engineers, drafters, materials specialists, fabricators, assembly teams, and numberless others that took a concept and brought it into reality.

Ingenuity the device brought us remarkable results, certainly; but the incalculable human effort behind it is every bit as remarkable, if not even more so. It's an amazing culmination and symbol of what happens when intelligent people are not just allowed to work to their highest potential, but encouraged to do so.

This is why the word "inspiration" comes up so much in discussions about NASA and other space-related endeavors. So often, it represents the best of what "our" (human) potential can achieve.

So a "salute" as well to everyone who gave Ingenuity to the rest of us. :thumbsup:
