First coats of sanding sealer applied. Love the chocolatey brown glow of sapele under a finish!

Thank you friend! It's always gratifying when the first finish hits the wood. It's also usually mortifying as all of your sanding imperfections start leaping right out at you!!

Sanding sealer coats done, and dry-sanded with Abranet 320. On to top coats!

Is it silly that I kinda like the uniformly textured surface of an orange peel finish?
If you can convince yourself of that, good. If you can get people to pay extra for it, better!

You backed yourself into a corner on this one, with that incredible quilt, it HAS to be super glossy. Gonna look like shimmering lava, so put on your Wetsanding Big Boy pants and get sanding! (Yeah, I know, wetsanding sucks)

Actually, I don't mind wetsanding at all. I find it to be oddly relaxing, probably because I tend to get lost in it. The problem is, doing it without burning through the edges. 
I forget which finish you said you are using. With Varathane I have been sanding with Abranet up to 800 grit then using the 3M super duty polishing compound that Bruce recommended. That and some 000 and 0000 steel wool equivalent pads get a nice semigloss but it’s just as easy to hit it with swirl remover and mirror glaze after that and get all shiny like.

I was intending to do a satin/semi-gloss on this one. The finish is Deft rattlecan lacquer, not Varathane. I'm still wrestling with Varathane on that other POS build....

Some 60 grit on a belt sander should take good care of that orange peel...
