Specialized Holding Fixtures for Luthier Work

I'm starting a thread about holding fixtures. These are home-made jigs and fixtures that we build to hold instrument parts steady while we work on them. One of the tough parts about Luthier work is that musical instrument parts are mostly all curved and shaped and funny looking. They are hard to hold on to when you need to apply some muscle to them.

Holding fixtures can be temporary, or they can be permanent. Stored on a shelf and pulled out for use many times.

I'll show you some of my most useful ones, and I welcome all of you to show what you've built. Crude setups or finished tooling.

I'll start out with one I just made an hour ago. It's a permanent holding fixture for holding the heel of a neck in a drill press or milling machine vise. Accurately and securely, and instant setup. I should have made this a long time ago. For years, I've been fumbling around with wedges and wood scraps and shims, trying to lock a neck heel into the milling machine vise.....I decided to stop and make up a decent holding fixture.

This type of holding fixture is basically a pair of custom-shape wooden vise jaws. They are made to set down into a vise. The neck fits into the wooden jaws, and the vise tightens the jaws on the sides of the neck heel.

The two jaws are kept aligned by a pair of pins. The pins are short lengths of 3/16" stainless steel rod, cutoffs from making truss rods. But they could be any steel or aluminum rod stock or pins. They are a sliding fit in matched holes in the jaws.

The jaws are quickly made from scraps of maple. The bottom blocks are cut from 6/4 (1 1/4") stock. The top wedge blocks are 3/4" thick.

I designed this fixture to fit a vise whose jaws are 6" wide x 2" high. That's common for 6" milling machine vises. A guitar or bass neck heel is normally about 3/4" thick. I sized the maple blocks so that the top surface of the heel would end up about even with the top of the vise jaws.

I cut the wedges based on the measurements from the taper of common necks. Most necks taper 1/8" over 6", so that's how I made this fixture. But the jaws have some freedom of angular movement. They will still clamp if the neck's taper is slightly different.

I also put in a wood dowel end stop pin on one side. The heel of the neck will sit solidly against it, so it won't slip in the tapered jaws.

And here it is in use, clamping a guitar neck heel in the mill vise. The neck is clamped securely between smooth wood surfaces, to minimize any marks on the finish, as I preform some surgery on it.

This neck is from an expensive guitar built by my friend Bill Asher. It had a broken truss rod, unfortunately. I'm about to machine the heel to take one of my newer double-acting spoke wheel head assemblies.

It took me about 30 minutes to make up this holding fixture. And now it's a permanent tool to be used for many years.

I have other truss rod replacement jobs waiting in line. Including two Wals. And I really don't want to damage those necks....

Awesome idea and timely - I have a Warmoth neck that the DCO (* Current Owner) screwed up trying to install inserts in. I need to drill and plug wenge and the main reason (other than I never finish stuff) it hasn't been attempted is that I haven't figured out how to hold the darn thing on the drill press.

I also have a very special neck that just won't keep tension on the truss rod and it's a skunk stripe . If it weren't for the logo/history and the fact that the neck is just so special (it's very live in the hands) I'd go throw a $180 warmoth strat neck on it.

Here's a little holding fixture I made for drilling out control knobs without scratching them. Who hasn't encountered the annoying 1/4" vs 6mm problem? It's really simple, an offcut piece of oak with a hole slightly larger than the size of the knob. Then there's a slit running across the hole, allowing it to flex and hold the knob when it's put in a vise. When you release the vise, the knob can drop right out.

For making Strat-style contours a lot faster. I cradle the body blank after it's been cut and routed to shape, then slide this through the band saw. Then attack with sanding to smooth it out.

How about sanding inside the horns? I've got an OSS but - I don't know if it's just the radius matching or what, but it doesn't really seem to help when you have a ton of sanding in there. (Sanding between coats)

Yikes.. I've got so many I have trouble even starting!

Possibly my most helpful and often used specialty holding jigs is this neck cradle. The angled portion is cut off and replaced with a new piece of wood to match the headstock angle of whatever is being worked on and the entire top edge is covered with 1/4" bulletin board cork. It is easily modified to hold about anything I want to use on it and quickly rotates and locks at any position using the large wood spinner knob under the bench top.

...and all the way down to simpler things like this specialty jig for holding banjo bridges when doing all the little shaping operations. (I've since added a bolt and wing nut a couple inches below the slot.)

Just bought a kit of knobs , threaded inserts and t-track bolts for holding up and holding down things.
Something I’ve been meaning to do.

I make up little disposable versions of this every time I work with round parts I don’t want to mar. I most recently made one up to disassemble the chucks of two old eggbeater drills.

The fixture I showed above will also drop right into a smaller drill press vise, if I need to do some simple drilling in a neck heel. Like plugging screw holes, or installing anchors.

You should build something like mine, to whatever dimensions you need. It's very simple construction.

I have another fixture (of course) just for holding necks face-down while milling out skunk stripes. I've shown it in other threads, but I'll dig up some pictures and show it here.

Here is my finishing rack, which I made for $7 out of some 1/2” pipe and a two-by-four from Home Depot.

I made one as well, spent a bit more (man those floor flanges are spendy). What I don't like about mine is the clamping the pipe to a block of wood - there's too much distance between the center of gravity of the body and the pivot. You can hold the body in most any position with little effort, but there are positions it does not want to remain in for long.

Some folks use 1-1/4" EMT smashed flat but I didn't have any cutoffs and the shortest piece was like $40, which was more than I wanted to pay for a piece of metal to smash.

(Also, if you cap your bottle of shellac on a high pressure day and the weather changes drastically enough to pop the cap, shellac can actually form a chain fountain and drain the ENTIRE bottle. I'm pressure sure it was the chain fountain effect and not a siphon, because it just kept going and I found an entire 4oz bottle I'd mixed up all over my jig and table saw a few months later.)
 
I don't build, but repairs sometimes require a jig. I built this one to handle a headstock break on a banjo that turned out to have a differential radius neck. It wound up replacing the one I'd been using for several years. The block that has fret relief slots can be removed and replaced with one for a different scale. The headstock stop can be adjusted to suit different headstocks. The neck and fret relief block can be made for any part of the neck. The clamp pads on either side can be removed and replaced with different arrangements. The over center clamps can be adjusted to pretty much any neck and allow having everything set up before there is glue working times to deal with. Cool thread.

I've been putting off a routing job on the back of a Les Paul body, and any suggestions would be welcomed. Since the top is arched, just clamping a couple of boards across the body is out, and a clamping arrangement involving something carved to cradle the curved top is a bridge too far.

I've read several posts from people who use double sided tape, and tried it myself with mixed results. Sometimes the templates have crept or slipped a little, in testing, and I don't trust it

The body in question is mahogony with a glassy urethane finish, and I want to rout on the flat side.
