I'd probably be more apt to play one if it was worn (not abused) I love worn instruments and gear. I can't stand something looking new for very long. On my Les Paul I have a nice wear starting on the upper part of the body (where my arm rubs) and I let the tweed on my old amp stay dirty, My NS-2A looks a little less beat than the Spector below.

Spector is the only bass I play so I don't go looking for other "worn" basses lol

i will say this, I am glad spector doesn't have a "worn" series. I can't stand the artificial wear..

Another +1, change strings and change battery before you do anything drastic. My NS2a likes fresh strings.

Or.....you could be a Fender guy. Nothing wrong with that, they make good basses too. But you'll have to grow a beard, start smoking a pipe, wear turtleneck sweaters and start hanging out at the bowling alley.:smug:

I agree for the most part. I haven't bought a "new" bass since 1992. The black NS2 looks played, the blue Euro looks disrespected. They like to be played.

Hey Doods,
The output really isn't the issue, it's the tone. It could be I'm just not used to the "Spector Tone" quite yet. The output between the two basses was definitely noticeable I have the tonepump set so it isn't overdriving my amp. I remember reading a review of a Euro 4LX in Bassplayer where they stated that they thought the bass was somewhat subdued until they put a fresh set of SS D'addario Pro Steels on. I guess I didn't realize how much SS gank is in my ideal sound.


I haven't worn a turtleneck or bowled for quite sometime though.

Now the F does have Rotosound Swing Bass 66's on it and I am still using the Spector nickelwounds that came with the bass. I am playing through a GK head with an Ampeg speaker cab. I have my tonepump pre on about 60%. Do you think a set of Rotos would open up the tone dramatically? I have to admit I'm not used to these EMG pickups. I know Lima uses SS strings on some of his Spectors do any of you do the same?

I'd have to agree with the others and check the battery, and while the control plate is off, check the Tonepump setting and connections.

I just compared my Roto 66 wearing Fender P/J to my Roto 45 loaded Euro 4LX (mine's black cherry, too) the other day, and the Spector is deeper, louder and growlier. After trying a few different sets of strings on the Euro, I find the nickel Rotos to be a really good match. The new string clank has dissipated, but the Roto growl is there in spades.

Where do you have the bass and treble set on the bass?

I'm using the SS Prosteels on my Euro 5LX and the tone is awesome with my non trim pot Tone Pump. Here is a picture of my bass and rig. As soon as you switch the strings I think you're going to be a VERY happy guy!

Haha, I know, I'm really bad for it.. I'm just stoked on this new gear, I haven't played out with it, and I've gotta show somebody :hyper:

Hoping to pick up a rack case and some kind of power strip/conditioner this weekend, then maybe I'll get around to taking some high res pictures instead of that not so great iPhone pic.

Get one!! You won't regret it.

ya I'm saving my pennies..... it will be the mesa 412 or 2 GK neo 212..... not sure yet, need to go play them

About 50-60% on both bass and treble. (White dots pointed straight down) Both pickups wide open or neck pickup backed off a bit. the Spector is considerably louder than the Fender and the battery is fine. Just trying to nail that Eddie Jackson/Geddy Lee/Steve Harris tone:D

I didn't get to try out much of the GK Neo Gear, but I'd put my Mesa up against any other cab out there on the market. It seems like twice the cab my SVT 810e was, and it's seriously SO easy to move. I brought it up my stairs myself, it really isn't all that heavy. I've heard great things about the GK neo's though. Why aren't you interested in the NEO 412?

well I've heard soo many great thing about the Mesa 412 and if I go GK then I would like the versatility of having 2 cabs, in case I don't need both. Thats my ideal setup.

I'd get some new strings, then! Your settings are similar to mine, and I really dig the tones I get.

I thought I read somewhere (perhaps an e-mail from PJ Rubal, someone correct me if I'm mistaken) that the strings that come on new Euro basses aren't MIA Spector nickels, but a Czech sourced string. Mine sounded good for about a month, then experienced a rapid decay to mud.

If you like SS, the clips that LimaGuy posted with Black Diamonds sounded awesome. If you prefer nickel, try a set of Roto 45 - dirt cheap @ bassstringsonline.com.

I recommend either DR Hi Beams or Dunlop Steel strings on the Euro. It will wake it up for sure.

Here is a simple sound clip of a Euro 4LX with Hi Beams
Recorded direct no EQ or Compression. TonePump trim at 60% Bass knob boosted 100% Treble at 0%

I love my black diamond strings. I have them on my NS-2JAR and NS-2A and they sound great on both, naturally growly
