The rusted screws in the bridge and PUPs really scare me too.
The worst beat up bass I ever saw was a Red Pedulla MVP that was in the TB Classifieds some months back. You could almost start crying
from looking at it.

Recorded/filmed the first of the Tone Series videos with Nicki Tedesco (Endorsed Ampeg, EMG and SPECTOR Artist) today.

So, I have a Euro 4LX. Many of you might remember it because of the sunburst refinish. I also switched it to black hardware and an EMG BTS preamp. I must admit that I find myself unhappy with the tone in comparison to my US NS4. Now for starters, I realize that comparing the basses is not apples to apples. The NS4 has the humbuckers, 18 volt preamp and is a walnut back/buckeye top. Just the wood alone is a big difference of course. However, I can't help but wonder if a switch to one of the US preamps that Spector sells wouldn't get it closer.
My question is that I love the sound of my NS4. More growl, more low end, more punch, etc. Anyway, I see the 9 volt preamp comes with the PJ models (not to mention is pricier). If i love the NS4, is the 18 volt a better option, or is their something about the pairing of the 18 volt with the humbuckers vs the 9 volt with the PJ? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

What am I doing wrong with Euro 4LX? It seems too "polite" for lack of a better word. I was playing along with some songs last night and it just seemed kinda bla. I plugged in my Fen&*$ Ja*% for comparison and there was the grit and growl I'm used to. Now the F does have Rotosound Swing Bass 66's on it and I am still using the Spector nickelwounds that came with the bass. I am playing through a GK head with an Ampeg speaker cab. I have my tonepump pre on about 60%. Do you think a set of Rotos would open up the tone dramatically? I have to admit I'm not used to these EMG pickups. I know Lima uses SS strings on some of his Spectors do any of you do the same?

That doesn't sound right at all. I previously had a passive bass with Seymour Duncan jazz pickups and when I would switch from that to my Euro 5LX, the difference in volume was astronomical.
Is it possible that the strings are dead? When I bought my Rebop5 used, it sounded completely awful but changing the strings made a huge difference. Also, maybe you need to replace your battery? If you leave your bass plugged in, it will drain the battery so that might be something you want to check also.
Lima uses Stainless Steel strings because he is allergic to nickel
Personally, I use Stainless Steel strings also but I just ordered a set of nickel strings and will be putting them on my Rebop very soon. It's personal preference if you like nickel or stainless but I don't think you would lose any growl by using one or the other.

Agreed, my Euro 5LX is a very high output bass, and has tons of growl. I would say you should change the strings and check the battery.
