SPECTOR® Club - Part 24

I'll keep mine flat... although my JAR has the badass bridge... and there is no angle on those saddles.... and none of my other stringed instruments have angled saddles.... it is probably a preference for intonation/string height.

I'm guessing it doesn't matter too much... :hiding:

The two adjustment screws that are on the front of the new saddles is to help with string height, after adjusting the truss rod, if you're having problems with fret buzz. you only need tiny incrementle adjustments.

I think a big part of the bridge design came from Steinberger.

as for angling the saddles, I've had them flat, tilted forward and tilted back over the years. Never seen too much difference myself. I read the angled bridge thing in the " Care and Feeding of your Spector Bass" guide. just figured i'd go with it. Way too simple of a thing to over think like some do :rollno: lol ;)

Here's a pic of the Stiney bridge
They used the Badass for some time after Ned's designing of the NS2. If anything, Ned followed suite himself with the Steinberger L2 bridge that has very similar saddles, but had intonation screws.....30 years ago.

The Spector bridge just seems too archaic to be something Ned Steinberger designed after the fact.

Dang Seventhframe that sucks! I'm reallly sorry to hear that. That happened once with my SWR 750. Was it from behind the power switch? If so, i can't remember what the cause was, but it was an easy fix. :)

In other news...i got two people wanting to buy my SWR rig. If all goes well = Spector + SVT 4 Pro +810E = bassgiant15:bassist:

No idea what we did, I had a buddy of mine who has the same rig and bi amps clean a and dirty channel same as I wanted to do so he was helping me out....I thought it would be a breeze but apparently not :)
I've never seen a man turn red so fast in my life! HA!:D
But yes, I think it was just behind the power switch. I am hoping it's an easy fix. A few people have told me that.
It happened pretty quickly, I heard a real bad fuzz sound then BAM! :eyebrow:
Ah well, considering I got it used I thought about replacing the tubes and giving it an overhaul anyway :)

That's great news that you're getting closer to your ultimate tone setup! :D:D:D:bassist::bassist::bassist:

Dang! I gotta read this!
Sucks that it is blocked from work!!!!!

Your job blocks Pantera.com? How dare they! I tried pasting the jpg in the response but it was huge and I would probably get yelled at :) so check it out when you can. It's not a very big article but explains his tone a bit more and was just interesting to read that he played Floods with his fingers.

That is crazy! I thought for sure he would have played it with a pick to get more of a cutting tone in the mix. I play strictly with my fingers live, but in the studio i play with a pick for more of a cutting tone in the mix.

YES!!!! I'm so stoked! I hope the guy buys it. He seems really interested in it.

OK... we still haven't verified the low B fit on a USA bridge. Anyone with a USA 5er with stock bridge? And not using taper or contact core strings.

I have an ns5 XL from 2001 and I don't have any problem with the B on the bridge....... I do tho on my early 90's streamer :-)

Also, I recently broke out my CD of (Porcupine Tree's) the incident ... it was Colin Edwin who really sold me on spectors.

Have you seen / heard the "Anesthetize" live recording DVD? If not, you must! Loads and loads of the Spector tone in a live setting. As great as the studios albums are, Porcupine Tree is even better in concert. The dynamics of a live performance can't be beat.

Just another thought. Could having the saddle angled back hold your string in the groove more? I mean when the saddle's flat, the point where the string meets the saddle would be the center (or end) of the string groove. Angled it meets at the beginning of the groove and then the rest of the groove holds it, instead of just the last half the groove holding the string. Thus having maximum string to saddle contact.

I trust Jimmy Eppard's advise. He's set up more basses, let alone Spector basses than I can imagine. I trust his advise as much as I would trust a college professor's opinion on their subject. You listen to your Doctor, right? He's my basses Doctor. But that all it is, advise and opinions. You take what you want and leave what you don't. If that means not doing what is advised, then so be it. To each his own. I personally take it, and will pass it on when asked.

+1

I'm not a fender fan, but their basses are pretty easy to work with in a studio setting, and not an incredibly bad choice if that's all your doing. The down side is only about 1 in 5 is even playable without major work from the get go.

I love my Euro, as it has replaced my Fender as my #1, but that's one of the most biased and ignorant things I've ever read on talkbass.

I have to disagree here.

Most MIM Fenders and all of the MIA Fenders I've picked up have been playable. But only a select few have been really good. Same with Squiers. I'd take a Squier or Fender over a Spector Legend any day. There, I said it. In the Spector club.

I'm not a Fender fan boy and I've played plenty of basses that I like better than Fender, but saying only 1 in 5 is playable is ridiculous.

How many Legend's have you actually played?

Three.

The first one I played was about a decade old and had seen better days, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but then I played two that were in mint condition with perfectly acceptable setups and was still unimpressed.

The one Rebop I tried was very nice and I'd like to try more Euro Spectors. But I have nothing good to say about the Spector Legend series.

but you are an overly picky bassists ;)

I can see how the setup (which can be set to preference) or tone might not have been to your liking, but I have never seen a Squire of any series that will setup as low and fast as a Spector, especially once you get into the set neck and neck through models.

Well, notice that I only said that about the Spector Legend series.

I have no doubt that the Euro and especially USA models will easily out-do a Squier.

For me it's not about how low you can get. It's about the neck. The neck is everything in a bass for me. The shape has to be right. The fingerboard edges have to be smooth. The frets have to be smooth. The neck finish can't hinder thumb movement.

The neck on the Legend just did not meet my standards. The necks on the Squier VM basses have.

Oh yes, yes I am. ;)

And if I can find a Spector bass that can satisfy my picky-ness, I will join this club and proudly display that Spector.

hey no worries man... we all like different basses

I have never played a legend but I had an older performer and I preferred it 3 times over to my squire (jazz V). I also had an 80's Fender Jazz bass special (the one Duff plays) and I liked how it played better but preferred the tone of my upgraded performer.

that being said I have heard some P basses I really like, but i just like Spector. that's my choice... I will always suggest a spector but will never push it.... its like religion, no point in pushing/forcing it, that will only turn people off :bassist:

Here's the deal bobome, I would suggest finding the best deal you can on either a Spector, MM, Jazz, or P or "?????" <-- <-- <-- insert other bass name here..... these are all fine instruments and all have their place in music. If you buy a nice MIA Standard Jazz for say $750.00 which for $750 its a good deal, if you don’t like it you can sell it and make your money back. Then buy a MM or Spector or something else. But I would imagine you will buy something, then Gas for something else, then gas for something else, it happens to all of us and its a blast and keeps us ALL coming back to the TB Classifieds!!

Your approach to your first bass is certainly realistic and applauded, but don’t stress out about it. Have fun with it and enjoy the ride! And once you find something be sure to post pics, we'd love to see what you decided on!! :bassist:[/QUOTE

silvertripper i know where you are coming from, i understand completely, me thinks. You have to deserve you next bass and/or it's a thrill to upgrade etc, it's part of the ride.

However, i am a bit of a masochist and i'd prefer to go for the kill. I have good reasons for that but they are way beyond the scope of this GREAT site.

So here is my question, rephrased: If money was no object what bass would you go for and why?

Thank you so much for answering my previous post.

Peace.
