You know I used to hate flats too. Now, I can't honestly imagine them on one of my Spectors. However, I dig them on my Lakland Hollowbody and on a P. On a Spector it seems like they would kind of kill the growl.

There are gigs that require them and on the two basses that you mentioned, I can totally see that.

I'm just not a fan of flats on an active bass, generally. I also don't understand why anyone would put flats on a Spector (unless it was a fretless).

Agreed. On a p bass they work for the mowtown tone.

25.7mm at the 12th fret has surpassed "baseball bat" and moved to "tree trunk" territory.

Had to borrow the PO's pics....the way that it was explained, this was an NS2a that Kramer put together at the end...the inlays are real....the Haz Lab is real...it absolutely kills....now to find another....

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It works, I almost can't believe I did it right the first time around *pauses to see if bass magically falls from workbench.* Many thanks goes to LimeGuy who actually talked me through understanding the wiring diagram. He also convinced me to go Vol/Vol just to get things going. What a swell guy!!

So it took like 3 hours, and I've been noodling around on it for almost an hour; it's a marked improvement over the passive EMG-SSD pups and Tonepump Jr. preamp. I actually love the single coil tone I get from both pups, and the TonePump is more growly than ever. I've trimmed mine down to about 65% to see if the tone is more articulate like I've read in the thread. Anyways, thanks EVERYONE who helped me and offered tips. I'll have sound clips up soon....

Frankly I don't see why ANYONE is allures by rounds.
They're clanky, rougher on your frets, FB and your fingers. Too bright...might as well play a six guitard! But then...I see mostly former guitards use rounds on basses. And you have to replace them more often! I want my basses to sound like a bass! But to each their own...

Hmmmm, I mentioned Vol/Vol in many posts ago and it got lost in all the talk..... Glad I see you did it and its working great.

I posted a few pages back but never got a response.

I ordered a new tone pump with trimpot but it only comes with 2 pots. I'm not sure if I'll do the installation myself (I might), but what other pots will I need to make this go smoothly? This is my first time replacing a preamp and I appreciate all of the help!

Was there any problem fitting the TW's into the SSD cavities?

If you are just switching from the old Tonepump to the new Tonepump. I think you can do it on your own. (As long as you think you can handle the soldering iron)

Take a look at this diagram. I will PM you with some advice in about an hour.

You can keep the exisiting Vol-Vol Pots and just remove and replace the Tonepump and the 2 Tonepump Pots.

It's an SSD NS-4CR. Definitely worth the money. I believe they came with the EMG pre or a very rare Czech version of the Hazlab pre.
The usually sell used for $800 and up...

Solid maple is correct. These are really outstanding basses. Probably has the EMG BT preamp if its all original. Solid brass bridge, not alloy. IMHO better than todays LX.

I would buy this bass if I had the money. Its gorgeous and I'd say the price is definitely rright, regardless of the preamp. The dots and solid maple wings are a dealmaker for me.

I went and took a look at the bass, then took it home! With the exception of a dent on the back and a tiny bit a wear on the upper where your arm would sit this thing is almost like new. It's a matte finish, the frets are in great shape. The actual pieces of wood used for the wings aren't as pretty as others that I've seen, but I think it's a little more utilitarian. All business.

It's got the SN inside the control cavity and what looks to be the EMG pre. It's a small (1 1/4" x 1 1/4") PCB, and I think it's got V/B/T/B controls. An older version of the BTS? I'm curious if it has new pickups in it, they have no wear at all. The logos are completely in tact. Time to start reading up on EMG vs. Tone Pump vs. Hazlab. I would certainly consider swapping it out if it gives me hat I want. The in-your-face Spector tone similar to Mike Starr/Rex/Queensryche. I assume they all have/had NS-2's with Hazlabs?

It came with a Spector case that is in very good shape as well, the previous owner spray painted their band name on it. GC attempted to tell me that it didn't come with a case, but the tag hanging on the bass specifically said otherwise. They also let me use the 12% coupon, so couple that with no tax in DE...and I got it for a little over $600.

Great! I really appreciate it. I'm just swapping out my non trim Tonepump for the trim version, and I don't think the soldering iron will be an issue, I just needed some guidance. I'm excited to get this new pre Hopefully it doesn't take too long to get to Canada.

And to the poster below me, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Rex uses a Tonepump, but don't quote me on that.

Great that they let you use the 12% off coupon they usually dont do that on used models. But you deserved it after paying all the NJ Turnpike tolls.

Your bass is probably very similar to the one that Mr.Bassie720 owns. His is refinished but the original finish was a oil matte finish with basic maple wings.

You will get a decent growl just from the EMG Pre, but the Tonepump or Haz ofcourse will give you some more grit and growl. Also dont forget about the Mightymite MM114 Haz copy which you can get for around $60.
