Even before his signature bass was released, he always had the TonePumps taken out of the Euro 5's and replaced it with an EMG BQC system since he liked the extra mid controls. And like you mentioned, he uses the EMG DC's instead of the TW's that normally come on the Euro's so that could also be a reason for the difference in sound you were getting Carlos.

That's interesting. His sound is still very growly and Spector-y, but different. Hard to describe, but I like his sound for what he does a lot! Makes me consider changing things up.
Does anyone else have experience with the DCs and EMG BQC pre?

Keep in mind also that he tunes down a full step for Blotted Science and that might factor in a bit. There is just something about a tuned down Spector that really sounds amazing. You also might be surprised to learn that both Blotted Science CD's were recorded through a Line 6 Bass POD XT on the Ampeg setting and that is it. It's just his Euro 5LX and that Bass POD so he's not doing anything crazy for his sound.

I bought one of those Bass POD XT's after hearing that but I need to mess around with it some more. There are so many things crammed into that little bean shaped thing that you can spend hours messing with it and still not have it figured out. I recorded a full album a few years back with the PodXT direct before I had my Euro's and my SR5 sounded so good through it on the Ampeg settings we left it as is. I was surprised how good it sounded.

That's true. I've noticed that down-tuned Spectors get really gnarly.
Thanks for the link! Every interview I read of his makes me appreciate him even more as a metal bassist. Him and Rex are probably the best for their genre, IMO, and I think its no coincidence that they're Spector artists.
I wonder if the Ampeg sound would be as good as the Bass POD coming from the balanced line out of my SVT CL. Now I'm anxious to try!

EURO5 LX
EMG BQC Control 18v
2 Volumes
EMG 40DC Pups
DR HiBeam Strings
Bass Pod XT.. and some mixing tweaks at the end by Jarzombek.

@ 1:04 the and other closeups it's a bluish colored Warwick Streamer Stage II.
There is a white looking mystery bass, could be an older Ibby or a Washburn... no telling. That bass is seen at wider shots that appear really "live".
Music videos back in the 1980's were a trip because in one shot the guitarist could be rockin' a Strat and the next shot a Les Paul. Watch The Cult's Fire Woman video. Some crazy flipping around of instruments in that video.

As for the sound, it's heavily processed. Sounds like it's had the copulation (of a vigorous fashion) compressed out of it with a slight octave effect in the mix. That'd be where I'd start if I was going to try and recreate it. Compression (a ton of it) and an octave pedal. See how that sounds with a growly bass... and the Stage II Streamer is a very growly bass.

Cool! I thought it sounded fretless! My Forte 5 will have GHS Black Nylon Tape Wounds installed on it...suppose to replicate fretless and upright bass sound.
