When chatting with Sam, we get creative in our analogies of the Spector sound and growl, so we decided to dedicate the following:

No thoughts on the X series... haven't tried them yet.
I prefer the EMG DC pups to the CS-TW pups if you are going to go with humbuckers.
And likewise, if you want single-coil (which is the mode with the CS-TW I prefer... it just sounds better to me), go with two EMG J pups. The CS-TW series just doesn't sound as good to me as the other options. I totally get that you're getting bang for the buck with those, but I prefer the non-coil tapping models.

I play on a stage weekly that's not bright but not real dark either. I have no problems seeing them for reference. On the basses that I had large inlays I noticed that I wasn't looking at the fretboard but I was looking at the side markers. If I ever get to where I'm playing in dark stages I'd opt for the LED maker lights probably.

Thanks. The side markers are 1/16th of an inch on my NS2-JA-R. A bit small for me in the dark. When I practice sitting my sight angle makes the fret markers fall under the strings. Those are 1/8th inch. Time to get some applique vinyl ones.

My question arises from the fact that the Forte4 has no fret markers; only side ones. I have yet to play one.

My Telecaster has 1/4 inch markers on top. They make the side markers almost superfluous with the contrast of black markers on a blonde maple neck.

Funny how these details make or break a guitar. I should probably get a USA Wimbish anyway. Money, money, money.

I totally am with JPS on this. My Euro 5LX has the TW pickups and I am going to most likely replace them with DC's. My NS-5XL has DC's and I really love the sound of them so I want to install them in my Euro as well. Plus, I never seem to put them in single coil mode but that mostly comes down to personal preference.

I actually have an answer to this. The newer USA models being built are starting to have larger side fret markers on them when being built. This is something that is brand new and has only been done within the last few months but you can thank Carlton Armstrong for this since he suggested it to Stuart.

The NS-5 basses that Carlton only have the inlay at the 12th fret so he relies on the side fret markers a good amount and mentioned that the original ones were a bit small and suggested they make them larger. My NS-5 has the larger ones and here is a crappy cell phone pic showing them but you can get the idea. See how Spector listens to their artists? That is just another great thing about them and shows they care.

Nice. I think my NS-2 has big markers too...but now that I think of it, I'd almost prefer a chunky line because when we jam, we dim the light for "ambiance" and on my Forte, it's really hard to tell where I am. So I placed small stickers to help :)
My guitar player uses white-out on his markers :P

Related to the pickup discussion, I recently picked up a set of EMG 40P5 and 40J pickups to try in my recently acquired NS-5XL. I liked the sound of them but I found it is pretty damn close to how my Euro 435 P/J sounds so it seems kind of redundant. If anyone from the Spector Club is interested in the set let me know - I'll cut you a better deal than what I listed in the classifieds.

Loving the NS-5XL BTW. Got some Fat Beams on there and it's got some nice bite when I goose the treble and bass a bit.

I was surprised that the low B tuner is closer to the nut than on a Euro 5. Part of the thicker winding of the B was starting to wrap around the post as a result. Also the gap at the bridge is narrower and I really had a hard time getting the Fat Beam winding in there. Again this wasn't an issue on the Euro 5. May have to go to tapered strings on this one but unfortunately the Fat Beams don't come with that option.

Thanks guys. Very cool. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has thought about fret and side markers.

The fact is a lot of guys who began playing in the '60s when they were young and had good eyes are now in their 60s and don't anymore. Reading glasses don't correct for dim light.
