When chatting with Sam, we get creative in our analogies of the Spector sound and growl, so we decided to dedicate the following:

Sorry but I put this together in 5 minutes :P so the rendition isn't great plus I needed to use 2 basses :P

Awesome! :D

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say it be crimped right above the ball, though. The problem seems to be that the string won't fit in the saddle, so shouldn't it be crimped where it fits into the saddle?
I was assuming you were having the same problem many here have complained of: that they were having difficulty getting strings .130 and above into the bridge slot/yoke.

After looking at your string again, it appears you are trying to use a string that, due to the wrap being way too long, will never work well on a Spector bridge because the wrap appears to go far beyond where it would rest in the groove of the saddle (hence, causing your "mellow" tone). For optimum performance, the wrap should never be on the saddle. This will not be good for intonation or tone.

It's hard to tell from your pic if that is still wrap or actual string above the "crimp" since you say this is a Neon (green I presume).
Was there still wrap where it was crimped and/or above the crimp?

Well I have decided to see if anyone on here wants to give my TRANS RED REX5 a new home . It has a couple of spots on the top , some rash on the back , recently buffed and looking good. I am not in a rush to sell and it will be at price that will justify me letting it go . My simple statement will be "go find another trans red Rex 5 " . They are not out there I mean they aren't out there ! Comes in fact case . Also is now wearing black knobs and new Ernie strings . PM for more details.

I think I might see what you're saying.

I was getting a bad tone in the B-string so I thought it may not be sitting in the saddle correctly. I assumed this was the issue others were referring to when they said they had to crimp the string. After reading what you've said, I guess this isn't the case and that's a different issue entirely where wrap does not fit into the back slot of bridge.

The failed attempt at a crimp on my string was done above the wrap, where the string makes contact with the bridge saddle, in an attempt to make the string fit better on the saddle (assuming by the wrap you mean the bunchy part directly above the ball, correct? Sorry, I'm pretty unfamiliar with all this). The actual string was making contact with the bridge saddle, not the wrap part.

After reading what you've said, I think I made a pretty misguided attempt at fixing an issue that may not even exist and ruined a string. Thank you for your help, this will definitely help keep me from repeating the same mistake on a new set of strings! :)

Dang, if this was for sale a month ago, I would've picked it up in a heartbeat, I love that red Rex! Black fingerprints too easy. Good luck with the sale, that's one great looking bass! :bassist:

On the positive side, now I have an excuse to get new strings. The Neons seemed to mellow out really quickly. What are some good recommendations for a growly, aggressive string with a tone that can be clear but also gets some deep bass, punchy, and growly and can keep that tone for a while. I'm thinking the new EBMM Cobalts, some other kind of DRs, or Circle Ks (balanced tension sounds interesting). Any thoughts?

DR Hi Beams will give you some nice growl and will last a while.

If you don't mind tighter tension strings DR Lo Riders would give you some nice really deep bass and growl. But they will be much tighter tension then the Neons.

Okay Spector experts, I need some advice. Took out my NS-2A today, Love that bass, I have had it since I was like 18, around '91. It used to be white, like I have said before my dad said I "played all the white off it". so I repainted it black. Wish I wouldn't have, but owell.

Here's my problem, I go to play it, I really suck at setting up basses, I have tried adjusting the neck, no good, the action is down all the way, this is the gap between the strings at the 12th fret.

it's not back bowed, but it is bowed to the point where I don't know if it is adjustable or not.

So, Advice? or it this just going to hang on the wall as part of my rock and roll history?

If you're not comfortable messing with it, take it to a tech. Alot of times they remove the truss rod nut and lubricate it so you're not fighting it as much. It's worth the $40-60 to have it done. I do my own basic setups, but still send my basses in ever year or two and they always come back playing better than I thought they could.

Yup, just haven't found a tech who is any better than I am here in Vegas...Would love suggestions Phat? Chris?

Oh if only I won the lottery...

On the front page of Bass Central's site, click on "New Arrivals" the 6th thing down is a USA RX-T. Looks awesome. It says it has the Spector 18 volt electronics (Hazlab -Usually 3 knobs, one stacked), but it looks like the controls for the 9 volt (Hazlab - 4 knobs).

Also, on most 18 volt Hazlab electronics I have seen in Spectors, there is a separate battery compartment on the back next to the control cavity, this only has the normal control compartment like the 9 volt would have.

Am I right about this?

Thanks for the advice! I'm not sure I want a really high tension, especially since the Rex is already 35" and I'm still getting used to that increase in tension, so it'll probably be between DR Hi Beams and EBMM Cobalts. I listened to the test you did between the two and I'm liking the Cobalts. I'll probably go out tomorrow and see if I can find them at a local music store. Thanks again. :)

Yup, you are right. The Spector site says the USA 9v circuit is standard and the 18v circuit only has 3 knobs. I thought I remember JPS mentioning that some of the RX-T models having tonepumps in them also but that might have been something Rex did for one of his own.

Chris,

I think Basscentral may have made a mistake on the pre listing.
The Stock pre on a Rex-T is a 9V Haz or OBP2.

If it was a 18V Haz it would have the separate battery compartment and 3 knob (stacked bass/treble) like you mentioned.

Although I thought the DC's don't mix well with the 9V Haz.

JPS, :help:

I would love to have this poster size for the wall of my music room (that's currently under construction).
