I personally have a number of different basses, for any occasion, I used to only play passive P-basses, but have since spread out a bit, though my only actives are Spectors (haz-copy is so warm sounding it might as well be passive!) and from playing everything from the cheapest crap bass to some really nice ones, there is a tone for everyone.
To be honest for buying new I find Squier's mid-priced range of basses (not the super cheap $100 ones) are some of THE best bang-for-your-buck basses brand new.
Used Spectors are still better bang though
I have a great idea: let's stop talking about F***ers altogether. This is a Spector thread; if you wanna talk F***der, there are about 600 other threads on TB where you can do that to you heart's content...

I've already owned 7 Spectors and currently have 5... a Forte-4, NS-4, REX4, NS-2A, and NS20004.
I narrowly missed owning a USA bolt-on a few weeks ago.
Still have a whole myriad of models to explore as the S.A.S. fund allows.
Should be joining you guys shortly.

Just snagged it off of CL last week for about 1/3 of what I paid for my white Euro LX. She has a few minor dings & scratches, but what an incredible sound! The solid maple wings do give the older ones a bit darker sound with some added low end. Thinking about grabbing a 3rd one in blueburst soon - Spector lust never ends...

Yeah they are pretty sweet! The neck profile on the BO I am ordering is going to be one of the thinnest they make! It'll feel more like a jazz bass than the traditional bulkier US 5 necks.

It was a bass specially built for 2011 Bass Player Live in LA. I am the dealer who originally sold it to Guy. PJ actually was the one that picked out all the specs on that beauty. You've got yourself quite a bass there!!
